Shipping & Delivery
Is shipping free?
Yes. We offer free shipping Australia wide on every order, with no minimum spend. Your chess set is delivered to your door at no extra cost, no matter where you are in the country.
How long does delivery take?
Most orders are packed and dispatched within 1 to 2 business days. Once shipped, metro deliveries typically arrive within 3 business days, and most other Australian addresses within 3 to 7 business days. For any item sent from an international partner warehouse, please allow 7 to 12 business days. We recommend allowing around 5 business days as a general guide.
Will I get tracking for my order?
Absolutely. As soon as your order ships, we email you tracking details so you can follow it every step of the way. If you are not home on delivery, the courier will usually leave your parcel at the nearest depot or post office and let you know how to arrange redelivery.
Do you ship anywhere in Australia?
Yes, we deliver right across Australia, from major cities to regional and remote areas. Delivery times to areas outside metro centres may be slightly longer, but shipping is still free.
Returns & Warranty
What is your returns policy?
We offer 100 day free returns on all unused items in their original packaging. If you change your mind, simply contact us within 100 days of receiving your order and we will arrange the return. Better still, Sterling Chess covers the cost of return shipping, so there is no risk in trying a set at home.
Are my products covered by warranty?
Yes. Every product we sell is backed by Australian Consumer Law and includes a minimum 12 month Australian warranty against manufacturer defects. Some brands, such as DGT electronic boards, carry a longer manufacturer warranty. If anything is not right, contact us and we will repair, replace or refund it.
What if my item arrives damaged or faulty?
Please contact us as soon as possible if your order arrives damaged or does not work as expected. We will sort it out quickly, either replacing the item or arranging a refund. We recommend keeping the original packaging until you are sure everything is in order.
How do I start a return?
Just get in touch with our team by phone, email or live chat and we will guide you through it. You can reach us on (03) 7037 0931 or via our Contact Us page.
Payment & Orders
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major cards including Visa, Mastercard and American Express, plus PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay. Every transaction is processed through a secure checkout.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can play now and pay later with Afterpay or Zip, spreading the cost of your set over interest-free instalments when you pay on time. See our Play Now, Pay Later page for full details.
Do you offer bulk or custom orders?
We do. Sterling Chess works with schools, clubs, businesses and event organisers on bulk and custom chess sets, boards and pieces. Visit our commercial orders page or get in touch for a tailored quote.
Choosing a Chess Set
How do I choose the right chess set?
It comes down to how you will use it. For serious play, look at a regulation tournament chess set with a classic Staunton design. For a statement piece or gift, a luxury or marble chess set makes a beautiful centrepiece. For travel, a magnetic or folding set is ideal. If you are unsure, our team is happy to recommend the right set for your needs and budget.
What is a Staunton chess set?
Staunton is the classic, standardised piece design used in official chess worldwide, recognisable by its distinctive knight, cross-topped king and clean, balanced shapes. It is the style most players picture when they think of chess, and it is required for tournament play. Browse our Staunton chess sets to see the range.
What size chess set do I need for tournament play?
For tournament and club play, the recommended king height is around 95 to 110mm, paired with a board that has squares of roughly 50 to 55mm. This keeps the pieces proportionate and stable during play. Our tournament chess sets are sized to regulation so you can buy with confidence.
What are weighted chess pieces?
Weighted pieces have a small metal insert in the base that gives them a satisfying heft and keeps them stable on the board. They feel more premium in the hand and are less likely to topple during play, which is why most quality sets, including our chess pieces, are weighted.
