It turns an open-ended game into a contest with a shape, it teaches you what your own time pressure feels like, and it is required equipment at any club night. Storage boxes

Fitted boxes in pine, golden rosewood and leatherette, with felt or velvet linings, including a recessed option that gives every piece its own cut-out. The decision is sizing rather than looks: a box is cut for a particular king height and will not close on a set that is 5mm too tall. Measure your king from base to the top of the cross and check the base diameter of your widest piece. Match those to the capacity stated on the product page rather than the box's outside dimensions.

Do accessories work with any brand of set?

Timers work with any set. Storage boxes do not, because they are cut for specific piece sizes. Always check the stated capacity against your own pieces.
