Traditional Games

Traditional games in oversized form: chess, Chinese checkers, four in a row, noughts and crosses and sudoku, built as permanent wall-mounted or freestanding pieces rather than boxed sets.

The games need no explaining, which is why they work at this scale. Boards run from 100cm to 135 x 125cm in metal and wood, made to order, with a 2 year manufacturer warranty.

Traditional games

The games here are ones almost everybody already knows. Chess, Chinese checkers, noughts and crosses, four in a row and sudoku need no rulebook and no explanation, which is exactly why they work at this scale. Nobody has to be taught, and nobody has to be persuaded to join in.

What is different is the format. These are oversized versions built as permanent objects, mounted on a wall or standing on the floor, rather than boxed sets brought out for an occasion.

The games, and who they suit

  • Chess. The Giant Chess Wall Game is a full 112 x 112cm playable board with 32 pieces included, in 14 x 14cm squares. It suits a player who wants a game permanently set up rather than unpacked each time.
  • Chinese checkers. The Mega Chinese Checkers star board takes two to six players, which makes it the most sociable game in the range and the one that works best across mixed ages.
  • Four in a row. Available mounted on a wall or freestanding at standing height. Two players, one minute to learn, and the format most likely to hold a room at a party.
  • Noughts and crosses. The Mega Tic Tac Toe board is wood rather than metal, with magnetic pieces. Quick rounds, and the lowest barrier of anything here.
  • Sudoku. The Giant Sudoku board is the outlier: a solo or turn-based puzzle rather than a contest, with a catalogue of templates at three difficulty levels.
  • Balance and dexterity. The Giant Balls and Balance is the party game of the group. Players pull sticks from under 100 balanced balls and try not to be the one who brings them down.

Why scale changes a familiar game

A game everybody knows gets played more when it is visible. The barrier to a round of noughts and crosses is not the rules, it is getting the board out, and a board already on the wall removes that entirely. The same logic explains why a sudoku grid left part-solved on a wall gets finished and one left in a book often does not.

Scale also changes who plays. A tabletop game seats two or four people around it; a wall board or a standing frame lets a group gather, watch and swap in, which is a different social shape and the reason these suit homes that host.

Traditional games FAQs

How many players do these take?

Chess, four in a row and noughts and crosses are two-player games. Chinese checkers takes two to six. Sudoku is solo or turn-based, and Balls and Balance suits a group of any size taking turns.

Are they genuinely playable, or decorative?

Playable. Every board here comes with its pieces, discs, pegs or tiles and is built to be used. The decorative quality is what they do between games, not instead of them.

What age are they suitable for?

Ages 3 and up, with adult supervision recommended under 6.

Are these made to order?

Yes. Contact the team for current production and delivery lead times before ordering.
