This set takes its name from the World Chess Championship of 1972, the match between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union.
It was played in Reykjavik, Iceland, and it has been dubbed the Match of the Century. That billing is what the pattern has carried with it ever since.
