The Arabian Knight is carved with a finer head than the classical war horse: a narrower muzzle, a high arched neck and a mane cut in long separated locks that run further back than most patterns attempt. It is the reason the set carries the name and the reason it costs what it does.
Underneath it is a genuinely heavy build. The king is 107mm on a 49mm base, the queen 92mm on 47mm, and the weighting goes beyond the usual triple weight classification. The pieces alone come to around 1,900g.
Genuine ebony heartwood against boxwood, with a 60cm board of black anigre and maple. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.
The same Arabian Knight pattern is listed separately as pieces only, in genuine ebony or bud rosewood. If you own a 60mm board already, or you want the bud rosewood, that is the listing to look at.
What the set adds is the correct board. A 49mm king base wants 60mm squares, and 60mm boards are a specialist size most people do not own. Getting the pairing right yourself takes a narrower search than it sounds.
The board is black anigre against maple at 13mm and 3,400g, a veneer construction. It gives a clean high-contrast surface without ebony pricing, which is sensible on a set where the ebony is already in the pieces. Other options across our chess boards collection.
Almost every piece in a Staunton set is turned against a metal profile, which is why pawns come out identical and rooks match each other exactly. The knight is the exception, and it is the only place a workshop can show what its carvers can do.
On this pattern the mane is cut as long separated locks running well back down the neck, and the muzzle is narrowed rather than left blunt. Both are slow, and both are done freehand, so the four knights in your set will differ slightly in the set of the head and the flow of the mane. That variation is the mark of hand work, not a defect.
The dark pieces are ebony heartwood, not boxwood dyed black. The colour is in the timber, so it shows a faint dark figure under direct light and will not lift off the high points after years of handling. Ebony is also dense, which is where a good part of the weight comes from.
The weighting goes beyond the usual triple weight classification. At around 1,900g across 34 pieces that is roughly 56g each, which is substantial for a 107mm set and gives the settled landing people buy heavy sets for. Weighting is added by hand, so the total varies by around ten per cent.
Sixty centimetres is a large playing surface by any measure. It wants a table at least a metre wide to leave room for captured pieces beside it, so measure before ordering rather than after.
Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, plus the board. No storage box is included. At 107mm the set is above the 95mm to 100mm band for rated play, so this is a home and display set. Conventional tournament sizes sit across our Staunton chess pieces range.
This is an expensive set and the money is in the right places: genuine ebony heartwood rather than ebonised boxwood, weighting beyond the usual triple classification, and a knight carving that actually justifies being named. The 60cm board is the practical argument for taking the set over the pieces, because a 49mm base genuinely needs 60mm squares and those boards are hard to source. Two things to be straight about. The board is veneer at 13mm, not solid timber, so the weight is in the pieces rather than underfoot. And 60cm plus 107mm pieces is a lot of table, so check your space. Buy it as the set that lives out permanently rather than one that goes back in a box between games.

60cm x 60cm with 60mm squares, 13mm thick and around 3,400g, in black anigre and maple veneer.
Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark pieces, not boxwood dyed or stained black. The colour runs through the timber rather than sitting on the surface.
Around 1,900g across the 34 pieces, roughly 56g each, which goes beyond the usual triple weight classification. Weighting is added by hand so the total varies by around ten per cent.
At least a metre wide. Sixty centimetres of board plus room for captured pieces beside it needs more table than people expect.
No. This listing is the 34 pieces and the board only.
