Arthur takes its name from King Arthur, the legendary British leader, and the series has been drawn to carry the billing.
It is a full club sized army, triple weighted, handcrafted in a choice of two timbers and hand polished to a shine on every single piece.
The knights are the highlight of the design. Each one has a long mane flowing back like a derby horse, which gives the army a forward, moving look.
The polish is what you notice first and the weight is what you notice second. This is a set built to be handled, never left in a drawer.
Look for it among our staunton chess pieces.
What the Arthur does differently is the finish. Every piece is hand polished, so the light runs along the shoulders of the queen and over the tops of the pawns.
Both options come off the same pattern, so nothing that affects play changes between them. Same heights, same bases, same weight, same square window. The choice is the colour of the dark army.
The knight is the piece the series is built around. The mane is long and carried right back along the neck, and it gives the back rank a sense of movement the other shapes do not have.
One honest note about the horse. It stands lower in the rank than the king, the queen and the bishop, so the mane that sells the set shows best with the pieces close to hand and is easy to lose from across a room.
These pieces suit large boards, with squares of 60mm to 65mm, and it is worth going to the top of that range. At the narrow end the back rank crowds, with less board around each piece, and on anything smaller the set will not fit.
This one is decided by the light in the room. Every piece is polished the same way, so what changes is how much each timber gives back when the light is poor.
Ebony wants a good lamp. It is a naturally dark timber, close to black in the hand, and the polishing takes that surface to a deep gloss; in a dim room it closes up to a plain dark shape.
Bud rosewood asks less of the room. The dark army comes up a warm red brown against the boxwood, and that colour is there to see in almost any light at all.
That is the whole of the difference. Neither option is heavier, taller or easier to play with, so pick ebony if you want maximum contrast and bud rosewood if you want colour and warmth.
Check the square size on your board before ordering. This set needs a large square, and a board cut smaller cannot be made to work with pieces of this scale.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The Arthur earns its place on the strength of the knight and the polish.
Standing still, this one still reads as moving, because the horse is drawn in motion and the whole set has been brought to a shine that rewards good light on the table.
Be clear about what you are taking on, though. It is large, heavy and expensive, and it wants a permanent home and not a cupboard. If you would rather have quieter, plainer shapes, our minimalist chess pieces are the better place to look.

Squares of 60mm to 65mm, and the top of that range is the one to buy for. The bases are wide, and at the narrow end the opening row tightens up, with little room left between one piece and its neighbour.
After the Arthur of British legend. The name is about the scale and the bearing of the pieces, not about any particular historical set.
Only in looks. The two share heights, bases, weight and square window. Ebony gives the sharper contrast against the boxwood, bud rosewood the warmer colour of the two. Both are polished the same way, so the shine is identical on either side.
2,550 grams all in. The set is triple weighted, and at that mass a piece stays exactly where it is put for as long as the game lasts.
34 chess pieces, which includes a spare queen of each colour for promotions. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, and a storage box is not included either. The chessmen are the whole of this listing, so plan for both when you match a board to the square window below.
