Anjan is not a timber most chess buyers have heard of. Hardwickia binata grows across central and southern India, it is dense and hard enough that it was traditionally used for cart axles and railway sleepers, and it works to a deep reddish brown that darkens further with handling.
It is an unusual choice for a chess set and a good one. Anjan takes a hand polish to a lasting shine without lacquer, and it is hard enough to hold a carved edge on the knight where a softer mid brown timber would blur.
The pattern here is a conventional British Staunton at 93mm on a 40mm base, deliberately narrow throughout. It is one of the better selling sets in our Staunton chess pieces.
Two sets in this part of the range use anjan wood against boxwood, and it is worth being clear about which is which because the timbers are identical and the sets are not.
This is the lighter and narrower of the two: a 93mm king on a 40mm base, 1,200g, with a notably slim 27mm pawn base. The Prestige Staunton Series in our Staunton chess pieces runs to a 100mm king on a 45mm base and 1,560g, which is a third heavier and visibly broader.
Choose this one if you want an open board and quick handling. Choose the Prestige if you want mass and a fuller back rank. Both need 55mm squares.
The standard mid brown option in chess sets is sheesham, an Indian rosewood that is widely available, easy to work and consistent. Anjan is harder, denser and less commonly used, partly because it is more difficult to turn cleanly and partly because supply is less predictable.
Where it pays off is durability and finish. A hand polished anjan piece resists the small dents and scuffs that accumulate on a set in weekly use, and the colour deepens over years rather than fading. On the knight, the hardness means the carved detail around the mane and muzzle stays crisp instead of softening under handling.
The pawn base here is 27mm, which is genuinely slim for a 50mm pawn. The knight sits on 33mm, narrower than the bishop and rook at 35mm, and the king on 40mm. Every diameter in the set is a step tighter than a comparable design would use.
On a 55mm board that produces real clear space between pieces. A locked pawn chain does not become a solid wall, files stay visually open, and a crowded middlegame is easier to read. The trade is stability: narrow bases tip more easily than wide ones, so this is a set for a steady table.
The 40mm king base puts this set on 55mm squares. You could drop to 50mm and it would fit, but the open, airy quality that the narrow bases are for would be lost, so 55mm is the size to buy.
No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size so you can match the requirement directly, and the wider chess pieces collection lists square sizing on every set.
This sells well for a straightforward reason: it is a properly made timber set at the affordable end, and anjan wood is a genuine step up in hardness over the sheesham most sets at this level use. The narrow bases give an open board that experienced players tend to like. The caveats follow directly from that: at 1,200g and roughly 35g a piece it is light, and a 27mm pawn base tips more easily than a wide one, so it wants a steady table. If you want the same timber with more mass, take the Prestige Staunton instead.

Squares of 55mm. That comes from the 40mm king base rather than the 93mm height. A 50mm board would fit but would lose the open spacing the narrow bases are designed for.
Hardwickia binata, a dense Indian hardwood traditionally used where strength mattered, such as cart axles and sleepers. It works to a deep reddish brown, takes a hand polish without lacquer, and darkens with handling.
Same timbers, different scale. This set is 93mm on a 40mm base at 1,200g. The Prestige is 100mm on a 45mm base at 1,560g, a third heavier and visibly broader. Both need 55mm squares.
1,200g across 34 pieces, around 35g a piece. That is moderate weighting, suited to quick handling rather than to maximum stability.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
