CB Mustang Series 113mm Chess Set

Everything about this one is oversized. The king is 113mm on a 49mm base, the queen follows it at 94mm, and both boards on offer are cut to 60mm squares to carry that footprint. It is a set that takes a table over rather than sitting on one.

There are two ways to buy it. The bud rosewood and boxwood pieces come with a 58.4cm board in bud rosewood and maple, 22mm thick and 5,500g, with algebraic notation around the edge. The ebony and boxwood pieces come with a 60cm black anigre and maple board, 13mm and 3,400g, matte finished and without notation. The carving is the same in both.

The knight is a mustang: a long neck, a raised head and a mane cut in flowing separated locks. It sits in our luxury chess sets collection.

How the two options differ

The chessmen are the same pattern at the same dimensions in both, so the choice is timber and board rather than shape. Bud rosewood is a warm reddish brown that deepens as it ages, and in that option the pieces are triple weighted. Ebony is dense and close to black, with the colour running through the timber rather than sitting on the surface.

The boards are where the two really separate. The 58.4cm board is 22mm of bud rosewood and maple at 5,500g, with algebraic notation printed around the edge. The 60cm board is a 13mm black anigre and maple veneer at 3,400g with a matte face, made in Spain, and it carries no notation. Both are cut to 60mm squares, so the pieces sit correctly on either one.

What 113mm and 60mm squares actually mean

A 113mm king is roughly fifteen per cent above tournament standard, and the 49mm base is what really drives the board size. The rule of thumb is that a king base should cover around three quarters of a square, which puts 49mm on 60mm and nothing smaller.

On a 55mm board this set would look cramped and the officers would touch along the back rank. Sixty millimetre squares are a specialist size, and that is the practical argument for taking a set rather than hunting down a board afterwards. Both options here are matched to it already.

If you already own 60mm squares, the same pattern is listed as Mustang chessmen on their own, in both timbers, and that is the more affordable route to the identical carving. Weighting is added by hand and the boards are handmade, so weights vary by around ten per cent.
