Description

Classic Cone Shaped 104mm Chess Pieces

A 104mm king standing on a 36mm base is a ratio of 35 per cent, where most Staunton sets sit between 38 and 43. These pieces are visibly slimmer and taller than convention allows, and they are the only cone shaped set in our range.

That is the cone in the name. Rather than the stepped collars and swelling profiles of a traditional Staunton, the forms taper more or less continuously from base to finial, which is what lets them run this tall without looking top heavy.

Iron weighted to 940g, in a choice of ebonised boxwood or sheesham against a boxwood light side. It sits among the modern shapes in our chess pieces collection.

Classic cone shaped chess pieces in ebonised and natural boxwood

Key features

  • 104mm (4.09 inch) king on a slim 36mm base, sized for 55mm squares
  • Continuously tapered cone profiles rather than stepped Staunton collars
  • Two options: ebonised boxwood in an even black, or sheesham with an open grain
  • The only cone shaped pattern in our range
  • Weighted with an iron stud set into every base, 940g across the full set
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Buff polished in multiple layers for a durable finish
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the two finishes compare

Every measurement is shared between the options: same 104mm king, same 36mm base, same 940g, same tapered profiles. Only the dark side changes.

Ebonised boxwood is the same timber as the light side, dyed and finished to a deep even black. It gives the sharpest contrast and no grain figure at all, which suits the stripped back cone shapes: nothing competes with the silhouette. Because the colour sits at the surface, a deep chip shows pale wood underneath and the high points can lighten after many years of handling.

Sheesham is Indian rosewood, a warm golden to reddish brown with open grain and darker streaking running through it. Contrast against boxwood is moderate rather than stark, and the figure gives the plain forms something to look at. Both appear across our wood chess pieces range.

Why a cone can be taller than a Staunton

A Staunton piece is a series of swellings and collars stacked on a stem, which puts material high up. It looks authoritative and it raises the centre of gravity, so the base has to widen as the piece grows.

A tapered cone puts most of its material at the bottom by definition. The centre of gravity sits lower as a proportion of the height, which means a narrower base can carry a taller piece. On this set that produces a 104mm king that stands securely on 36mm, an outcome a traditionally profiled piece of the same height could not manage.

Slim pieces on a full sized board

The recommendation is 55mm squares, which for a 36mm base is generous. That is deliberate rather than an error: with pieces this slim, a tight board makes the set look like a forest of sticks, and the extra space around each piece is what lets the individual profiles read.

The effect on a full board is unusually open. Where a conventional set with wide bases fills the back rank almost completely, this one leaves clear space between neighbours, so files and diagonals stay visible even with everything in place.

Choosing a board for a 36mm base

Take the 55mm recommendation rather than working it back from the base diameter. A 36mm base would technically fit a 45mm or 50mm board, but the set is designed around clear space and it loses its character on a tight one.

No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size, and a plain unfigured board suits these slim profiles better than a heavily grained one.

Our expert take

The cone profile is doing real engineering work here, not just styling: tapering the form continuously keeps the mass low, which is what lets a 104mm king stand on a 36mm base without feeling precarious. The result is an unusually open back rank, with genuine space between pieces on a 55mm board, and nothing else in the range has that look. Two caveats. At roughly 28g a piece it is a light set in the hand, which suits the slim profile but will feel modest if you are used to triple weighted pieces. And there is nothing of the traditional Staunton vocabulary in it, so anyone who wants collar rings and a familiar silhouette should look elsewhere. On finish, the ebonised keeps the shapes pure and reads fastest in play; the sheesham gives the plain forms some grain to look at.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 55mm. That is generous for a 36mm base and it is deliberate: the pieces are slim, and the clear space is what lets each profile read. On a tight board the set looks crowded.

What is the difference between the two options?

Only the dark side. Ebonised boxwood is dyed to a deep even black with no grain figure. Sheesham is an Indian rosewood in warm brown with open grain and darker streaking. Height, base, weight and profile are identical.

Why is the base so narrow for the height?

The cone profile tapers continuously, which keeps the mass low in the piece rather than carrying it up into a wide crown. That lets a 104mm king stand securely on 36mm, which a traditionally profiled piece could not.

How heavy is the set?

940g across 34 pieces, around 28g a piece. It is weighted with an iron stud in each base but it is a light set in absolute terms, which suits the slim profile.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards and storage boxes are sold separately.
