Description

Classic Cone Shaped Ebonised 104mm Chess Set with 48cm Board

A 104mm king standing on a 36mm base is a ratio of 35 per cent, where most Staunton sets sit between 38 and 43. The cone profile is what makes it work: rather than the stepped collars and swelling forms of a traditional Staunton, each piece tapers more or less continuously from base to finial, keeping the mass low.

The board is the interesting pairing. Forty eight centimetres with 50mm squares, 22mm of solid ebony and maple, weighing 3,000g against 940g of pieces.

Slim pieces on a heavy board is an unusual combination and a deliberate one. It sits in our chess pieces collection.

Classic Cone Shaped chess set in ebonised and natural boxwood with its 48cm board

Key features

  • 104mm (4.09 inch) king on a slim 36mm base
  • Continuously tapered cone profiles rather than stepped Staunton collars
  • 48cm ebony and maple board with 50mm squares, 22mm thick
  • Ebonised dark side against a natural boxwood light side
  • Iron stud weighting with thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • 940g of pieces on a 3,000g board, 3,940g for the whole set
  • Solid timber board at 3,000g, more than three times the weight of the pieces

How the set compares to the pieces on their own

The Classic Cone pattern is listed separately as pieces only, in a choice of ebonised or sheesham. This set is the ebonised version with a board, so if you want sheesham or you already own a board, the pieces listing is the one to look at.

The board pairing is worth thinking about. The pieces recommend 55mm squares because they are slim and want air; the board supplied here is 50mm, which packs them closer. That is a tighter, denser look than the pieces alone would suggest, and some people prefer it.

What you gain is a genuinely substantial board: 22mm of solid ebony and maple at 3,000g, more than three times the weight of the pieces. Compare across our chess boards collection.

Classic Cone Shaped chess pieces with a 104mm king on a slim 36mm base

Why a cone can be taller than a Staunton

A Staunton piece is a series of swellings and collars stacked on a stem, which puts material high up. It looks authoritative and it raises the centre of gravity, so the base has to widen as the piece grows.

A tapered cone puts most of its material at the bottom by definition. The centre of gravity sits lower as a proportion of the height, which means a narrower base can carry a taller piece. On this set that produces a 104mm king standing securely on 36mm, an outcome a traditionally profiled piece of the same height could not manage.

A light set on a heavy board

Nine hundred and forty grams across 34 pieces is around 28g each, which is light. The board is 3,000g. That ratio is unusual, and it changes how the set plays: the board never shifts, and the pieces move easily across it rather than landing with a thud.

Whether that suits you depends on what you want from a set. If you like the settled weight of a triple weighted piece in the hand, this is not that. If you like a board that stays exactly where you put it and pieces that glide, it is a good combination and a rare one at this price.

Tapered cone profiles on the ebonised Classic Cone Shaped pieces

Fifty millimetre squares, and what arrives

The board runs 50mm squares. For a 36mm base that is a close fit rather than a generous one, so the back rank is dense and the pieces stand near each other. On 55mm they would have more air, which is what the pieces are documented against, but 50mm keeps the whole set more compact.

Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, plus the 48cm board. No storage box is included. Conventional Staunton patterns sit across our Staunton chess pieces range if the cone profile is not for you.

Our expert take

The cone profile is doing real engineering work here rather than styling: tapering the form continuously keeps the mass low, which is what lets a 104mm king stand on a 36mm base without feeling precarious. Nothing else in the range looks like it. What makes this set worth taking over the pieces alone is the board, which is 22mm of solid ebony and maple at 3,000g and is the substantial half of the purchase by a distance. The one thing to weigh is the square size. Fifty millimetres packs slim pieces closer than the 55mm they are documented against, so the back rank reads dense rather than airy. I like it that way, but if you want each piece to stand clear, buy the pieces alone and put them on 55mm.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the board?

48cm x 48cm with 50mm squares, 22mm thick and around 3,000g, in solid ebony and maple.

Is the dark side genuine ebony?

The pieces are ebonised boxwood, dyed and finished black rather than turned from ebony heartwood. The board's dark squares are genuine ebony.

Why is the base so narrow for the height?

The cone profile tapers continuously, which keeps the mass low in the piece rather than carrying it up into a wide crown. That lets a 104mm king stand securely on 36mm, which a traditionally profiled piece could not.

How heavy is the set?

3,940g in total: around 940g of pieces and a 3,000g board. The pieces are light in the hand, which suits the slim profile, and the board is the substantial half.

Is a storage box included?

No. This listing is the 34 pieces and the board only.
