This is the antiqued camel bone version of the English Series, a design launched in 2022 and inspired by the pre-Staunton designs that were in use before the 1849 Staunton chessmen arrived. The king stands 95mm.
The finish is what you buy it for. The dark army is distress antiqued, which gives it the patina of vintage chessmen worn in over decades of use.
Camel bone is the material on both sides of the board. It is a substrate collectors rate highly, and it is what lets a design with this much detail in it hold together.
It is a tall army standing on a slim foot, so the pieces rise well off the board and there is still open board around them.
It sits among our reproduction chess pieces.
The antiquing is the whole character of this one. The dark side has been distressed on purpose so the surface reads as worn, the way chessmen look after decades of being handled.
The design behind it is newer than the finish suggests. It was launched in 2022 and draws on more than one of the patterns that were common before 1849, so no single old set stands behind it.
Camel bone earns its place here. It carves cleanly and it takes a soft lustre once the work on it is finished, which is what lets a design this detailed look right on the board.
The army is tall and narrow. The king leads on a slim foot and the whole set keeps a light footprint for its height, which is part of why it looks the way it does.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 40mm to 45mm. That is a tight window, so measure the board you own first, and take the top of the range if you are choosing a new one, because the extra room suits an army this tall.
The first thing to understand is that the wear is deliberate. The finish is meant to look used from the day the parcel opens, and nothing here arrives bright, even and factory fresh.
It changes how a board looks. With an aged dark army on it the whole position reads older and quieter, and the set settles into a room the way a genuinely old object does.
The carving is where the rest of the interest sits. The work runs over every piece, and the antiquing lies on top of it, so the detail still reads clearly even with the surface aged.
Anyone who wants everything pristine should look elsewhere. If you like chessmen that look new and stay looking new, the aged surface here will read as a fault when it is the entire idea.
Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes bone crack. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The finish is the reason I would own this set, and I would not pretend there was another one.
A worn surface makes a set look as though it has been in a family for years, and camel bone takes that treatment better than you might expect from a pale material.
Be clear on two things before you order. The squares on your board have to be right, because the window here is narrow, and the aged surface is the whole point of this one, so go in wanting it.
Buy it if the aged surface is what you came for. If you want a bright, clean army with no wear worked into it, our wood chess pieces are where to go.

Squares of 40mm to 45mm. That is a narrow window, so measure the squares on the board you have before you order. Buying new, go to the wide end of that window and let this army breathe.
Nothing on these pieces is damage. The dark army was distressed deliberately to give the appearance of patina, so there is nothing here to polish out or put right. The aged look is the finish you are buying.
The English Series was launched in 2022, and it takes its inspiration from the designs that were current until the Staunton pattern arrived in 1849. More than one of them feeds into it, so the look is old and the design is not.
The complete set weighs 388 grams. These are light chessmen, so one will move if you catch it with a sleeve, and the table underneath wants to be a steady one.
32 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
