Description

Excalibur Luxury Artisan Series Ebony 118mm Chess Pieces

This is the tallest set we carry. A 118mm king is roughly a quarter above tournament standard, and at 2,000g the whole set weighs as much as some sets weigh with a board included.

The knight is where the name comes from. It is carved with a sweeping mane and a forward, low-set head meant to echo a drawn sword, and it stands alone on the piece rather than being tucked into a collar the way most Staunton knights are.

Genuine ebony against boxwood, with hand made dotted detailing at the bottom of each shank. It sits at the top of our luxury chess pieces collection.

Excalibur Luxury Artisan Series chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood

Key features

  • 118mm (4.64 inch) king on a 50mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • The tallest set in the Sterling Chess range
  • Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark side, not ebonised boxwood
  • Weighted to 2,000g across the full set, around 59g a piece
  • Hand made dotted line detailing at the bottom of every shank
  • Turned collar rings on king, queens, bishops and pawns
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the Excalibur compares to the rest of the luxury range

Height is the obvious separator. At 118mm this stands above every other set we carry, and the 50mm base and 48mm queen base are scaled to match. Nothing else in the range asks as much of a board.

The subtler difference is the detailing. Most luxury sets rely on the knight and on collar rings; this one adds a hand made dotted line around the foot of each shank, which is slow work and shows most clearly on the pawns where there is least other decoration.

Against the Ancient Indian Warrior at 104mm, the Excalibur is taller and heavier but proportionally narrower through the officer group, so it reads as upright where the other reads as grounded. Both sit in our wood chess pieces range.

Excalibur chess pieces with a 118mm king on a 50mm base

What 118mm asks of your board

Squares of 60mm, and that is a floor rather than a suggestion. At 50mm the king base fills five sixths of a 60mm square, which is already generous, and anything smaller crowds the back rank into a solid wall.

Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size. Most club and home boards run 50mm to 55mm, so this is worth confirming before ordering rather than after. A board a size too small does not just look wrong, it makes the position harder to read, which defeats the purpose of buying a set with this much presence.

The knight and the dotted shank

The knight is carved freehand, so the set of the head and the flow of the mane vary slightly from piece to piece. The detail runs to the eyes, nostrils, teeth and the lay of the mane, and it rewards looking at closely rather than at arm's length.

The dotted line at the foot of each shank is the detail most people miss on first inspection. It is applied by hand on every piece, and on the pawns, where there is nothing else competing for attention, it is what lifts them above being plain turned forms.

A set for display as much as for play

At 59g a piece and 118mm tall this is not a set you carry anywhere. It is a set that stays out, on a table where it can be seen, and gets played on when someone sits down at it.

Bought on that basis it is straightforward to recommend. Bought as a playing set for a club it is the wrong choice, because it exceeds tournament size by a wide margin. Our tournament chess pieces range covers that need. No board is included with these pieces.

Our expert take

Everything about this set is about presence, and it delivers it honestly: 118mm is genuinely imposing on a table and 2,000g of ebony and boxwood feels like it. The dotted shank detailing is the part worth paying for, because it is slow hand work that shows most on the pieces which usually get the least attention. Two hard constraints, though. It needs 60mm squares, which most people do not own, and at a quarter above tournament height it is not a set for club play. Buy it as the set that lives on the table, and it is the best thing we carry for that job.
