The Sinquefield Cup is the strongest annual tournament in the United States, and the 2014 edition is the one people still talk about: Fabiano Caruana won his first seven games against a field that included Carlsen, Aronian and Nakamura. This reproduces the pieces used there.
They are built low and broad, which is what a top-level tournament wants. A 96mm king on a 45mm base is a squat ratio, and the queen follows at 78mm on 42mm. Nothing on the board is easy to knock over.
Bud rosewood against boxwood, paired with a 55cm red ash burl and maple board. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.
The same Imperial Collector pattern is listed separately as pieces only. If you own a 55mm board, that is the cheaper route.
The board supplied here is red ash burl against maple: a figured veneer, so the dark squares carry a swirling grain that changes across the board rather than reading as one flat tone. It is the decorative half of the pairing, which works because the pieces themselves are plain, functional tournament forms.
A 45mm king base is wide, and 55mm squares are the correct match for it. On 50mm the back rank would crowd noticeably. Other boards sit across our chess boards collection.
Ninety six millimetres on a 45mm base is a wider ratio than almost any display set would accept. At the top level nobody cares how a set photographs from the side; what matters is that a piece does not go over when a player reaches across the board under time pressure, and that the position reads instantly on camera from above.
Broad bases do both. They lower the centre of gravity and they make each piece occupy its square clearly. The 1,600g across 34 pieces adds to it: heavy enough to settle when placed, not so heavy that a long session becomes tiring.
Bud rosewood is a figured cut taken from around the growth buds of the tree, so the grain swirls rather than running straight. Colour ranges from warm red brown to deeper purple brown, and no two pieces look quite the same.
The board's red ash burl is the same principle in veneer form: a thin figured face over a stable core. That is what allows a 55cm board at 12mm and under 3kg. It is not solid timber, and the decoration is genuinely the point of it rather than a substitute for substance.
Ninety six millimetres sits inside the usual 95mm to 100mm band, and the 45mm base pairs with 55mm squares. Individual events set their own equipment rules, so check with an organiser if this is for rated play.
Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, plus the 55cm board. No storage box is included. Weighting is added by hand so weights vary around ten per cent. Conventional patterns across our Staunton chess pieces range.
What you are buying here is a genuine tournament design in a timber tournaments never use. The Sinquefield proportions are the real thing: 96mm on a 45mm base is deliberately squat, the pieces settle firmly, and the position reads cleanly from above. Putting that pattern in bud rosewood is the indulgence, and it works because the forms are plain enough that the figured grain has room to show. The board follows the same logic with red ash burl. Two practical notes. The board is veneer at 12mm, so the substance is in the pieces rather than underfoot. And a 45mm base really does want 55mm squares, which is what is supplied here, so do not be tempted to move this set onto a smaller board later.
