Description

Indian Chetak II Luxury 109mm Chess Pieces

Chetak was Maharana Pratap's horse at the battle of Haldighati in 1576, and by tradition carried his wounded rider clear of the field before dying. He is the most celebrated horse in Indian history and the knight on this set is carved after him.

This is the second version of the pattern, and the revision went into the knight: the eyes, nostrils, teeth and mane are all cut more deeply than the original, which is what most of the extra work in a set like this pays for.

A 109mm king, triple weighted to 2,200g, in genuine ebony or bud rosewood. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Indian Chetak II chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 109mm king

Key features

  • 109mm (4.3 inch) king, sized for 60mm squares
  • Knight carved after Chetak, with deeply cut eyes, nostrils, teeth and mane
  • Available in genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood
  • Triple weighted to 2,200g across the full set, around 65g a piece
  • Turned collar rings on the pieces with thick green felts
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Second version of the pattern, revised at the knight
  • Around a week of work goes into each set

How the two timbers compare

Genuine ebony is near black with almost no figure, and on a set whose entire selling point is a deeply carved knight that is the stronger pairing. Nothing in the timber competes with the cutting, and ebony holds a fine carved edge better than most timbers.

Bud rosewood is a figured burl with a reddish ground and swirling grain. It is the warmer object and the more unusual one, but on a heavily detailed knight the figure and the carving do compete for attention.

Dimensions, the 2,200g weight and the price are identical across both. The wider range sits in our wood chess pieces range.

What changed in the second version

The original Chetak pattern was already a carved knight set. The revision concentrated on depth: eyes cut in rather than suggested, nostrils opened, teeth defined and the mane separated into strands rather than left as a ridged mass.

That is where the labour goes. The supplier reckons close to a week per set, and almost all of the difference between a good carved knight and an ordinary one is in how far the carver goes on those four features before stopping. It is also why the knights vary slightly from one another, since none of that work can be jigged.

2,200g at 109mm

Around 65g a piece puts this near the top of our weight range. At 109mm that is a deliberate choice rather than an accident of size: the pieces are meant to feel substantial in the hand and to stay exactly where they are put.

Whether that suits you depends on how you play. For a set that lives on a table and gets used slowly, it is a pleasure. For rapid play where pieces are moved constantly, this much mass becomes work, and a lighter set at the same height would serve better.

Sizing a board

Squares of 60mm. Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size rather than a shelf standard, so confirm what you have before ordering rather than after.

For the ebony option almost any board suits. For the bud rosewood, a plain surface is worth choosing deliberately, because burl figure against a figured board makes both harder to read. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size. No board is included with these pieces.

Our expert take

The knight carries this set and the second version genuinely improved it: the eyes, nostrils, teeth and mane are cut deep rather than suggested, which is exactly where the difference between a good carved knight and a mediocre one lives. I would take the ebony over the bud rosewood here, against my usual preference, because a near black timber lets that carving read where burl figure competes with it. Be honest with yourself about the weight though. At 2,200g and 65g a piece this is a set for slow games on a permanent table, not for rapid play. And it needs 60mm squares.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm, which is a specialist size rather than a shelf standard. Confirm what you have before ordering.

Who was Chetak?

Maharana Pratap's horse at the battle of Haldighati in 1576. By tradition he carried his wounded rider clear of the field before dying, and he is the most celebrated horse in Indian history.

What is different about version two?

The revision went into the knight. The eyes, nostrils, teeth and mane are all cut more deeply than the original rather than being suggested, which is where nearly all the extra labour in a carved set goes.

Which timber should I choose?

Both are identical in size and weight. Genuine ebony is near black and lets the knight carving read most clearly; bud rosewood is a figured burl that is warmer but competes visually with the detail.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
