Description

Jumbo Pro Staunton 159mm Chess Pieces

The Jumbo Pro is a very large Staunton army, sold in a choice of three timbers, and the shapes are the same whichever one you pick.

The king stands 159mm. That is a display scale, not a club scale, and it decides what the set is for before anything else on this page does.

The design follows the traditional Staunton pattern, the one people play tournaments and kitchen table games on, scaled up until it reads from across a room.

Every piece is hand-carved and hand-turned by master artisans, which at this size is work you notice standing up, not only leaning in over the board.

You will find it in our luxury chess pieces.

Jumbo Pro Staunton chessmen in bud rosewood and boxwood

Key features

  • One pattern in three dark timbers, at a scale meant for display and not for club play
  • Triple weighted, and the whole army comes in at 5,000 grams, identical in all three timbers
  • The traditional Staunton pattern, scaled up far enough to hold a room, not merely a table
  • Hand-carved and hand-turned, so the detail carries at standing height as well as close up
  • Bud rosewood, ebony wood or golden rosewood for the dark side, each of them against boxwood
  • Cut for a very large square, well past what an ordinary chess board will give you
  • Two extra queens are included, so a promoted pawn never has to be an upturned rook
  • Built for a table it can live on, never a set you clear away after a game

About the pieces

Heft is the first thing anyone notices. Triple weighting at this scale puts serious mass in every piece, and a piece this heavy gets placed, never pushed. It settles where it lands and it stays there.

All three options come off one pattern, so the height, the weight and the square window are the same in each of them. The choice in front of you is timber and nothing else.

The trade is honest and worth saying plainly. An army this size is a job to get in and out, and a thin folding board will not carry it.

It also earns its keep when nobody is playing. Chessmen at this scale read as furniture, which is why they turn up in hotel lobbies, in shop windows, and in the middle of a coffee table.

These pieces need very large boards, with squares of 65mm to 75mm, and 75mm is the size to aim for. At the tight end of that window the widest feet are wider than the square itself, so neighbours touch.

Ebony wood and boxwood Jumbo Pro Staunton king and queen

Choosing between the three timbers

Ebony wood is the firmest contrast of the three. Ebony is a naturally dark timber that reads as black across a room, and against pale boxwood the two armies separate at any distance and in any light.

Bud rosewood is the warmest. The figure comes and goes across the turned collars, so the dark side has movement in it up close while still reading as one clean colour from the far side of the table.

Golden rosewood, which is also sold as sheesham, is the gentlest of the three dark sides. The contrast against boxwood is softer, and it is the option that sits most quietly in a room of pale furniture.

Timber is the only variable here. The pattern, the scale and the board it needs are identical across all three, so this is a decision about how the set looks and not about how it plays.

One caution attaches to the softest of the three. This army is built to read from across a room, and the gentler the separation between the sides, the less of that reach you actually get.

Settle the board before you order. Measure a square on the board you already own, because a set this size will not sit on an ordinary one, and a new board is part of what you are spending.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

The Jumbo Pro commits, and that is most of the case for it. It is not a slightly large set, it is an unmistakably big one, and it behaves like it.

Hand work at this scale shows from the doorway, and the triple weighting means nothing about it feels hollow once you pick a piece up.

The caveat is the board, every time. Anyone whose squares are an ordinary size, or who wants a set that goes back in a cupboard after a game, should be looking at our tournament chess pieces instead.

Frequently asked questions

What square size do these pieces need?

Squares of 65mm to 75mm, and go to the top of that window if the board is still to be bought. At the tight end the bases crowd into each other along the back rank and the opening position looks jammed.

Will these fit the board I already own?

Almost certainly not, unless that board was bought for a very large square. Measure one square on it before you order, because this is the figure that decides whether the set works at all.

How heavy is the set?

5,000 grams, and the figure is the same in all three timbers. The pieces are triple weighted, so each one lands and stops dead, and nothing rocks when somebody knocks the table.

Does the timber choice change the size or the weight?

No. All three options share one pattern, one king height, one total weight and one recommended square size. Only the colour of the dark army changes.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, which includes a spare queen of each colour for promotions. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither. This listing is the chessmen only in the timber you choose, so the board and somewhere to keep them are both separate purchases.
