Description

Leningrad Staunton 101mm Chess Pieces

The Leningrad is an evolved variation of the Russian Zagreb chessmen, and it is offered here in three timbers, each set against boxwood.

It is a sturdy pattern with nothing delicate on it, and that is the whole character of the thing. Every piece is drawn broad and plain, and there is no fine detail sitting there waiting to be chipped.

The shapes were inspired by the championship sets sold in the middle of the twentieth century. Underneath it stays Staunton, carrying an elegance that belongs to Soviet design.

The three options are one army in three colours. Heights, bases, weight and the square window all match across them, so choosing here is choosing a look and nothing else.

You will find it in our reproduction chess pieces.

Rosewood and boxwood Leningrad Staunton chessmen

Key features

  • A 101mm king across all three timbers, which puts this army at full club playing scale
  • Staunton underneath, with an elegance of Soviet design, grown out of the Russian Zagreb chessmen
  • Three timbers on one pattern: rosewood, golden rosewood or ebonised boxwood, each set against boxwood
  • A sturdy profile with nothing delicate on it, so there is no fine detail waiting to be chipped
  • 1,340 grams across the set, so a piece lands where you put it and stays there
  • Heights, bases and the square window match across the three options, so the only choice left is colour
  • Cut for large squares, and the window is the same whichever of the three timbers you pick
  • 34 chess pieces supplied, with no board and no storage box, so both of those are chosen separately

About the pieces

Sturdiness is the first thing to register. The outline is plain and solid from the crown all the way down, and there is nothing fine or fussy anywhere on it, which is exactly what this pattern was drawn to be.

That is not the same as being plain to look at. The shapes are clean and confident, and the army takes on a settled, serious look the moment it is set out on a board.

There is real mass here for the height. A piece comes down with some authority and it does not shuffle when someone knocks the table, which is what you want from a set you actually play on.

The honest note is about that same plainness. There is little to study close up, and anyone hoping for an ornate knight or a decorated crown will find this army reserved.

These pieces suit larger boards, with squares of 55mm to 60mm, and the tighter end of that window is the one that flatters them. The feet on this pattern are modest for the height, so even the smaller square keeps clear board around the army.

Ebonised boxwood Leningrad Staunton chessmen, 101mm king

Choosing between the three timbers

Rosewood against boxwood is the deepest of the three. The dark army is a rich reddish brown, and the boxwood answers it cleanly at every distance.

Golden rosewood against boxwood is the warmest. The dark side is a honey brown, and the contrast between the two armies is the gentlest of the three.

Ebonised boxwood against boxwood is the most formal. The dark side is brought to a near black, so the two armies separate at a glance and the outlines read from across a room.

If you cannot decide, think about the room. Ebonised suits a bright space and a long viewing distance, golden rosewood suits a warm one lit by lamps, and rosewood is happy in either.

Settle the board before you order. Measure the squares on the board you already own against the window below, and budget for a new board if the numbers do not land inside it.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

What I like about the Leningrad is that it does not try very hard.

It is a broad, plain, well proportioned army with a Soviet accent, and because there is nothing delicate on it you can move it around a table for years without ever worrying about it.

Be clear about what arrives. This is the chessmen only, with no board and no box, and it is a heavy set that wants a table it can stay on. Anyone after something more decorated should start in our luxury chess pieces instead.

Frequently asked questions

What square size do these pieces need?

Squares of 55mm to 60mm. If the board is still to be bought, the tighter end is the better match, because this army does not need much room around its feet to look right.

Does the timber change anything other than colour?

No. All three options share the same heights, the same bases, the same weight and the same square window, so what separates them is colour alone.

How heavy is the set?

1,340 grams for the full set. There is enough mass in it that a piece stays where you leave it and the array does not creep about during a long game.

What is the Leningrad pattern?

The Russian Zagreb design, carried a step further. In practice that means a broad, sturdy Staunton outline with a Soviet accent, drawn without fine detail, and an easy set to live with.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither is included. This listing is the chessmen alone, so a board and a box are separate purchases; match a board to the square window in the specifications below.
