Mammoth Staunton 156mm Chess Pieces

The Mammoth is a Staunton army built at display size, sold in three timbers, and it does not follow the pattern to the letter.

The king stands 156mm, and the rest of the army is drawn to match, so this is a set that gets looked at as much as it gets played with.

The knight is what the series is really about. It has been carved with a ferocious expression and given far more drama than anything else on the board.

Everywhere else the outline is Staunton with slight deviations, which is what gives the set its own character without ever making a piece hard to recognise.

About the pieces

The knight is where the hand time goes. Everything else in the army is turned, and a horse cannot be, so it is cut by hand and this one has been given a hard and openly aggressive face.

Underneath, the three options share one carving, one king height and one square window. What changes between them is the colour of the dark army and, on one of the three, the weight on the scales.

The deviations elsewhere are slight and they are deliberate. The outline still reads as Staunton at a glance, so nobody has to relearn the board, and up close it is plainly not an off the shelf shape.

The scale has a cost and it is fair to say so. This is not an army you set up for an evening and clear away again; it expects a table of its own and stays there.

These pieces need very large boards, with squares of 65mm to 75mm, and it is worth going to 75mm. At the tight end of that window the bases very nearly meet, and the opening rank looks jammed rather than imposing.

Rosewood runs deeper and redder in tone, which gives the big shapes a calmer surface, and it is the lightest of the three once the box is on the scales.

Ebony wood puts nothing in the way of the outline. It is a naturally dark timber that comes up close to black, so on a piece this large the silhouette does the work, and it holds up in weak light and at a distance.
