The knight is the whole argument for this set. Where most Staunton knights inherit the arched neck and open mouth of the Parthenon horse, the Pegasus mane is cut in a stacked, layered sweep meant to read as folded wings, with the nostrils flared wide as though the animal has just landed. It is a conceit, and it is carried off well enough that you notice it before you notice anything else.
Underneath the idea is a serious build. The king stands 118mm on a 47mm base and the queen comes up to 100mm, which is unusually close behind it, so the two royal pieces read as a pair rather than a leader and a follower. Triple weighted to 2,000g across 34 pieces.
Two timbers, identical in every dimension: genuine ebony heartwood, or bud rosewood with its figured burl grain. Both sit in our luxury chess pieces collection.
Every measurement is shared. Same 118mm king, same 47mm base, same 2,000g, same carving. The choice is purely what the dark side looks like across the board.
Genuine ebony is the traditional answer and the higher contrast one. It is heartwood rather than dyed or ebonised boxwood, so the black is in the timber itself and shows a faint dark brown figure under direct light. Against boxwood it separates instantly, which matters more than people expect once a position gets crowded.
Bud rosewood is the more decorative choice. The burl figure gives each piece a swirled, individual grain, warm red brown rather than black, and no two pawns look quite the same. It reads softer under lamplight and photographs better. Both sit alongside the rest of our wood chess pieces range.
Eighteen millimetres is a narrow gap between king and queen. Most sets at this height open a 25mm to 30mm gap, which gives the king an obvious authority on the back rank and lets the queen sit visually with the bishops. Here the queen at 100mm stands almost level, and the effect is a centre of the rank that reads as two tall pieces rather than one.
Whether that is a virtue depends on how you play. It makes for a striking table, and it suits the set's display ambitions. In fast play it takes a game or two to stop reaching for the wrong piece, because you are used to picking the king out by height alone.
The mane is cut in layers rather than combed in a single flow, which is the detail that makes the winged reading work. It is slow work and it is done freehand, so the lay of the mane and the exact set of the head shift slightly from knight to knight. You have four of them and they will not be identical twins.
Everything else is turned against a metal profile, so pawns, rooks and bishops are consistent piece to piece. That division is worth knowing before the set arrives: variation in the knights is the mark of hand work, not a defect, and it is the only place in a Staunton set where a workshop's carvers have room to show what they can do.
Squares of 55mm at an absolute minimum, and 60mm is the better fit. The 47mm king base is what drives that, not the height. On 55mm squares the back rank is full but workable; on anything under it the officers start to touch and the position becomes harder to read at a glance.
Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size and worth confirming you own before ordering. No board ships with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size, and every set in the wider chess pieces collection lists its recommendation.
This is a well judged luxury set that earns its price on the knight and the weighting rather than on rarity. Two thousand grams across 34 pieces gives it the thud people buy triple weighting for, and the layered mane is genuinely distinctive next to the standard war horse. The tall queen is the one thing to think about honestly: at 100mm against a 118mm king it looks superb on a table and costs you a moment of hesitation in blitz. On timber, take the ebony if you want the sharpest separation between the sides, and the bud rosewood if you want the set that draws comment when it is not being played on. The practical constraint is the board, because 47mm bases really do want 60mm squares and most people own 50mm.
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
Squares of 55mm as a floor and 60mm for a comfortable fit. That comes from the 47mm king base rather than the 118mm height, so measure your squares before ordering.
Only the dark timber. Genuine ebony heartwood gives a near black side with high contrast against the boxwood. Bud rosewood gives a warm red brown with swirled burl figure. Height, base, weight and carving are identical.
The ebony option is genuine ebony heartwood, not boxwood dyed or stained black. The colour is in the timber, so it shows a faint dark figure rather than a flat uniform black.
It is how the pattern is proportioned. At 100mm the queen sits only 18mm below the 118mm king, which gives the centre of the back rank more presence. It takes a game or two to adjust if you are used to picking the king out by height.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
