A 118mm king is a large piece by any standard, and the Pegasus Series carries it on a 47mm base with the officers all standing on 41mm. Triple weighted, the pieces come in at 2,000g across the set, so the height is backed by real mass rather than being a tall shell.
The knight is the reason for the name. Its mane is cut as a pair of folded wings rather than a flowing crest, and the nostrils are flared wide, the idea being a winged horse that has just landed.
Two timbers are offered and each ships with a solid board matched to it. Both sit in our luxury chess pieces collection.
The carving is identical between them. King 118mm, queen 100mm, bishop 87mm, knight 79mm, rook 68mm, pawn 62mm, triple weighted at 2,000g. Only the timber changes, and with it the board that ships alongside.
The bud rosewood option comes with a solid bud rosewood and maple board at 5,600g. The ebony option comes with a solid ebony and maple board at 4,000g. Both are 58.4cm with 60mm squares and 22mm thick, both are solid rather than veneer, and both are felted with green velvet underneath.
Choose on colour. Bud rosewood is a warm reddish brown that darkens with age; ebony is dense black with a fine close grain. The same pattern is listed as pieces only in both timbers across our luxury chess pieces collection.
Height is the first thing people want and the first thing they regret. A 118mm king with 41mm officer bases wants 60mm squares to sit clear, which is well above the 50mm most club boards use, and the board supplied here is sized for it.
The table is the real constraint. A 58.4cm board plus room to set captured pieces beside it wants close to a metre of clear width, and a set this tall looks wrong crowded against a wall. Measure the space before ordering rather than after. If the room is tight, a 104mm or 107mm set will give you most of the presence in considerably less footprint.
Most Staunton knights are a horse's head with a mane cut as a crest running down the neck. The Pegasus takes the same silhouette and reworks the mane as two folded wings lying against the neck, with the nostrils opened wider than a conventional carving would.
Whether you read it as a winged horse or simply as an unusual mane is a matter of taste, but it is genuinely distinctive and it identifies the pattern instantly across a room. As with any hand carved knight, the four in your set will differ slightly from one another.
Both boards are solid timber at 22mm rather than a veneer over a core. That is nearly twice the thickness of the 12mm and 13mm Spanish veneer boards that ship with most sets at this price, and it is why the bud rosewood option reaches 5,600g and outweighs its own pieces close to three to one.
Sixty millimetre squares against a 47mm king base is a proper fit, not a stretch. Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, plus the matched board. No storage box. Other board sizes sit across our chess boards collection and the pattern is also listed among our Staunton chess pieces.
What makes this pair worth looking at is that the board is matched to the pieces rather than bolted on. Buy the ebony and the board's dark squares are ebony; buy the bud rosewood and they are bud rosewood, both solid at 22mm and felted underneath. That coherence is unusual at this price and it is the difference between a set and an assembly. The knight is a real design rather than a name, and at 2,000g the triple weighting matches the scale of a 118mm king instead of falling short of it. The honest caution is size. Sixty millimetre squares and a 58.4cm board are a lot of table, and 118mm is tall enough that the set dominates whatever room it sits in. If that is what you want, this delivers it properly. If you are unsure, go one size down.

The bud rosewood option ships with a solid bud rosewood and maple board at 5,600g. The ebony option ships with a solid ebony and maple board at 4,000g. Both are 58.4cm with 60mm squares and 22mm thick.
Yes. Identical carving and identical dimensions, triple weighted at 2,000g. Only the timber differs.
Yes, genuine ebony heartwood on the dark pieces and on the board's dark squares in that option, rather than a dye over a pale timber.
Not well. A 47mm king base with 41mm officer bases beside it needs 60mm squares to sit clear, and 60mm is what the supplied board gives.
No. Each option is the 34 pieces and its matched board.
