Description

Persian Knight Staunton 89mm Chess Pieces

The Persian Knight is a Staunton army with a profile of its own. The same unusual shaping runs the whole way down from the king to the pawn, and the king stands 89mm.

The knight is the piece people look at first. It is handsomely carved, and the posture it has been given is an elegant one, on both the rosewood and the ebonised option.

Two timbers carry the pattern. One dark army is rosewood, deep and red brown; the other is boxwood darkened right down towards black. Both play against a boxwood light side.

This is a tournament sized set for casual games, or for adding some variety to a collection. The pieces are stable, durable and well behaved on the board.

Look for it in our staunton chess pieces.

Persian Knight Staunton chessmen in rosewood and boxwood

Key features

  • An 89mm king in a tournament sized Staunton army, with one unusual profile shared by every piece on the board
  • Knights that are handsomely carved and carry an elegant posture, which is the making of this whole pattern
  • Two timbers on one pattern: rosewood, or boxwood darkened towards black, each against a boxwood light army
  • Stable and durable in the hand, which is what you want from a set that comes out most weeks
  • Weighted in both timbers, with the rosewood option the heavier of the two, so a played piece settles and stays put
  • Both timbers ask for the same square window, so the board you buy does not depend on which one you choose
  • Built for casual play at tournament size, and an easy way to add something different to an existing collection
  • 34 chess pieces supplied on their own, with no board and no storage box, both of which are bought separately

About the pieces

The profile is what sets this design apart. It is an alluring and unusual one, carried by the whole army without exception, so every piece plainly belongs to a single family.

The horse does the talking. Its posture is the elegant part of this design, and on a board of otherwise familiar Staunton shapes it is the piece that holds the eye.

In the hand the army is steady. The pieces are weighted, they sit down firmly, and they do not wander about when somebody nudges the table mid game.

The honest note is that this is a playing set first. It is drawn for casual games at tournament size, and a buyer after a centrepiece for a room will find it restrained.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm, and anywhere inside that window works. The upper end leaves a little more air around the king, so take it if the board is a new purchase.

Ebonised boxwood Persian Knight Staunton chessmen with the boxwood light army

Choosing between the two timbers

Rosewood is the richer of the pair. Its dark side is a deep red brown, and beside the pale boxwood the contrast reads warm across the whole board.

The ebonised option is the sharper one. Its dark side is the darkened boxwood, and from anywhere in the room the two armies separate at a glance.

Everything about the carving is shared. Both options are the same pattern at the same dimensions, and both are weighted, with the rosewood set carrying a little more mass in total.

If the set lives on a shelf between games, rosewood is the warmer thing to have out. If you want the sides to read apart the moment you sit down, take the ebonised.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

This is the one I would hand to somebody buying their second proper set, and I would mean it as a compliment.

The shaping is unusual without being odd, the horse has genuine character, and at tournament size it plays like a set you would keep in the cupboard and reach for every week. Nothing about it is trying too hard.

Buy it for the profile, and because a set with some personality in it makes an ordinary evening game better. If what you want is a pattern with a documented history behind it, our reproduction chess pieces are where I would send you.

Rosewood Persian Knight Staunton chessmen, boxwood light pieces

Frequently asked questions

What square size do these pieces need?

Squares of 50mm to 55mm. The whole of that window is comfortable, and the wider end gives the king a fraction more room, so choose it if you are buying the board new.

What makes the Persian Knight different?

Two things: the knight, which stands in a posture you will remember, and the one profile the whole army shares, king to pawn.

How do the two timbers differ?

Rosewood is deep and red brown beside the pale light army. The ebonised option takes boxwood almost to black, which separates the sides far more sharply.

How heavy is the set?

957 grams in the rosewood option and 900 grams in the ebonised. Both are weighted, so a piece comes to rest as soon as you set it down.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
