Set the three plastic sets we carry side by side and this is the one that stops looking like plastic. The bishop is 75mm where the others are 65mm and 66mm, the queen is 85mm, and at 940g the whole set weighs more than several of our wooden ones.
The officers are the tell. A tall bishop under a 97mm king gives the back rank a proper stepped profile, which is exactly what an inexpensive set usually sacrifices first because short officers are cheaper to mould and easier to pack.
Black against natural white, on a 39mm base with an unusually wide 36mm rook foot. It belongs in our tournament chess pieces.
All three of our plastic sets share a 97mm king, so height is not the way to choose between them. Weight and the officer rank are.
This is the heaviest at 940g and the one with real presence: a 75mm bishop and an 85mm queen give the back rank a stepped profile rather than a flat one. The Club Series at 864g has noticeably shorter officers, with a 66mm bishop. The International Series is unweighted at 450g and is built to a price for schools and clubs buying in quantity.
Against a wooden set of the same height this holds its own on weight and loses on warmth. If the equipment will be handled by many people or travel a lot, that trade is worth making.
The cheapest way to make a set of chess pieces less expensive is to shorten the officers. Less material, faster moulding, smaller box. It is also the change a buyer is least likely to notice on a product page, because the king height stays the same and that is the number everyone quotes.
You notice it on a board. A short bishop disappears behind a pawn chain, and a back rank where the officers are all much of a height reads as a flat wall rather than a structure. Keeping the bishop at 75mm under a 97mm king costs more to produce and it is the single clearest sign that a set was designed to be played on.
The rook here sits on a 36mm base against 34mm for the bishop and knight. That inversion is deliberate and it does two things: it anchors the corners of the board, and it makes the rook the hardest minor piece to knock over, which matters because it is the piece most often reached across.
Combined with 940g of total weight and felt on every base, the set stays where it is put. A hard clock press does not scatter the position and a bumped table does not cost you the game, which is the whole argument for weighted plastic over wood in a club setting.
The 39mm king base gives a range of 50mm to 60mm squares. Because the officers are tall, the upper half of that range suits the set better: at 55mm to 60mm the stepped back rank has room to read properly, where at 50mm it looks crowded.
No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size, and a roll up vinyl board is the usual pairing for tournament plastic.
Of the three plastic sets this is the one to buy if you actually care how the board looks. A 75mm bishop under a 97mm king is nine millimetres taller than the alternatives and it is the difference between a stepped back rank and a flat one. At 940g it also outweighs several wooden sets in our range. The caveats are minor: it costs the same as the lighter two so there is no reason not to take it unless you need the unweighted set for a school, and the supplier has published only four photographs of it, so the gallery here is shorter than usual.

Squares of 50mm to 60mm, from the 39mm king base. Because the officers are tall, 55mm to 60mm suits the set better and gives the stepped back rank room to read.
This is the heaviest at 940g and has the tallest officers, with a 75mm bishop against 66mm on the Club Series and 65mm on the International Series. The Club Series is light weighted at 864g and the International Series is unweighted at 450g. All three are in or near our tournament chess pieces.
Solid plastic throughout, weighted, with thick green felt on every base and an anti smudge coating on the surface.
The rook sits on 36mm against 34mm for the bishop and knight. It anchors the corners of the board and makes the rook harder to knock over, which matters because it is the piece most often reached across.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
