Description

Reproduction 1904 Cambridge Springs Tournament Ebonised 101mm Chess Pieces

Cambridge Springs 1904 was the first major international congress held in twentieth century America, at a hotel in rural Pennsylvania, with Lasker as reigning world champion and Chigorin, Pillsbury and Showalter across the tables. Pillsbury's opening preparation there is still discussed.

The set made for it carries a king finial unlike any other pattern we stock, and a base wide enough at 44mm to mark it as a tournament piece rather than a parlour one.

Ebonised boxwood against antiqued boxwood, weighted to 1,200g. It sits among our reproduction chess pieces.

1904 Cambridge Springs Tournament chess pieces in ebonised and antiqued boxwood

Key features

  • 101mm (4.0 inch) king on a wide 44mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Distinctive king finial specific to the 1904 Cambridge Springs pattern
  • Ebonised boxwood dark side against an antiqued boxwood light side
  • Four cuts in each rook turret rather than the usual three
  • Wide based pawns that give the front rank unusual presence
  • Weighted to 1,200g, with turned collar rings on the pieces
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the Cambridge Springs pattern differs from a standard Staunton

Three features separate it. The king finial is the obvious one, cut to a profile you will not find on another set in the range and the quickest way to identify the pattern across a room.

The rooks carry four cuts in the turret where three or five is more usual. And the pawns sit on unusually wide bases for their height, which gives the front rank a solidity that most patterns reserve for the officers.

Underneath those, the proportions are conventional: a clean step from king through queen and bishop to knight and rook. It reads quickly, which is what a tournament pattern has to do. Compare against our Staunton chess pieces.

The antiqued light side

New boxwood is close to cream and takes years of handling to mellow. Antiquing does that ageing at the factory through a staged colour and polish process, so the light side arrives already warm and browned.

Against an ebonised dark side the effect is a softer contrast than black against cream, and noticeably less glare under a bright light. For a reproduction of a 1904 set it is the historically honest choice as well, since no set from that congress would have stayed bright for long.

Why the base is so wide

At 44mm the king base is wide for a 101mm piece, and the officers follow at 40mm with the rook at 39mm. Nothing on this set is narrow.

A wide foot was how a maker guaranteed stability in an era when weighting was inconsistent, and the reproduction keeps the geometry while adding modern weighting on top. The result is a set that is genuinely difficult to knock over, and one that needs 60mm squares to breathe rather than the 55mm its height alone would suggest.

Unique king finial on the 1904 Cambridge Springs Tournament chess pieces

Choosing a board for the pattern

Squares of 60mm. That is larger than a 101mm king would normally need and the wide bases are the reason. On a 55mm board the back rank runs together and the individual profiles stop reading.

Given the set already carries a great deal of visual detail, a plain or lightly figured board suits it better than a heavily grained one. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size. No board is included with these pieces.

Our expert take

The king finial is the reason to buy this rather than another large ebonised set. It is genuinely distinctive, it identifies the pattern instantly, and nothing else in our range carries it. The antiqued light side is the right pairing too, softer and much easier under a lamp than bright boxwood would be. Two practical points. The wide bases mean 60mm squares rather than the 55mm the height alone would suggest, so check your board. And this is ebonised boxwood, not genuine ebony, which is why it sits where it does on price.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. The bases are wide throughout, from a 44mm king down to 39mm rooks, so the set needs more square than its height alone suggests.

Is the dark side genuine ebony?

No. The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood taken to a deep even black. Genuine ebony sets sit across our wood chess pieces range.

What is antiqued boxwood?

Boxwood aged at the factory through a staged colour and polish process, so it arrives warm and browned rather than cream. It softens the contrast and cuts glare.

What makes this pattern identifiable?

The king finial is specific to the 1904 Cambridge Springs set, and the rooks carry four turret cuts rather than the usual three. The pawns also sit on unusually wide bases.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
