Cambridge Springs in 1904 was one of the great early American tournaments, won by Frank Marshall ahead of both Lasker and Pillsbury. The pieces used there were a broad, heavy Staunton, and this reproduces that pattern in ebonised and antiqued boxwood.
The proportions are the tell. A 101mm king sits on a 44mm base, the queen at 85mm on 43mm, and the bishop reaches 78mm. Everything is wide and close together, which is what a tournament set of the period looked like.
The board is 60cm across with 60mm squares, in black anigre and maple. It sits among our reproduction chess pieces.
The same Cambridge Springs pattern is listed separately as pieces only. If you already own a 60mm board, that is the cheaper route.
Sixty millimetre squares are the reason to consider the set instead. A 44mm king base wants them, and 60mm boards are a specialist size that most people do not own. Pairing this yourself means a narrower search than you would expect.
The board is black anigre against maple, a veneer construction at 13mm and 3,400g. Anigre is an African hardwood taken to a deep near-black; against maple it gives a clean, high contrast surface without the price of ebony. Other options sit across our chess boards collection.
Broad and low. Set this next to a modern set of the same height and the difference is all in the bases: 44mm under a 101mm king, 43mm under the queen, 40mm under the bishop and knight. Nothing tapers away.
That was the period habit and it had a practical reason. Tournament halls used cloth boards and long time controls, pieces were handled constantly over many hours, and a wide foot meant they stayed upright. The look that resulted is heavier and more grounded than the elegant, narrow-based patterns that came later.
The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood, dyed and finished to a deep even black rather than turned from ebony heartwood. The light pieces are antiqued, toned down from bright cream to a warmer, slightly used colour.
Together that gives a board with less glare and more depth than a stark black and white set, and it is closer to how the originals would have looked. It also means contrast is a shade softer than an ebony and natural boxwood set, so the set wants decent light to read well.
Sixty centimetres across with 60mm squares is a large playing surface by any measure. It needs a table at least a metre wide to sit comfortably with room to move pieces off the board, so measure before ordering.
At 13mm and 3,400g it is a veneer construction rather than solid timber, which is how a board this size stays manageable. Thirty four pieces including two spare queens, plus the board. No storage box is included. Conventional sizes sit across our Staunton chess pieces range.
Two reasons to buy this one. The first is the pattern: broad-based tournament sets from the turn of the century look genuinely different from anything modern, and the Cambridge Springs proportions are among the better examples. The second is the board size. A 44mm king base wants 60mm squares, 60mm boards are hard to find, and here one arrives matched. That is worth more than it sounds. Two honest points. The board is veneer at 13mm rather than solid timber, which is the trade for getting 60cm at a manageable weight, and ebonised against antiqued boxwood is a softer contrast than black on cream, so play under decent light. Neither is a fault, but both shape what you are getting.

A 1904 tournament in Pennsylvania won by Frank Marshall ahead of Lasker and Pillsbury. The pieces used there had this broad, low proportion, and the pattern has been reproduced since.
No. The pieces are ebonised boxwood, dyed and finished black. The board's dark squares are black anigre, an African hardwood taken to a deep near-black.
At least a metre wide. Sixty centimetres of board plus room to set captured pieces beside it needs more table than people expect, so measure before ordering.
No. This listing is the 34 pieces and the board only.
