Description

Reproduction 1940s Art Deco Weighted Sheesham 97mm Chess Pieces

Art Deco stripped the ornament off everything it touched, and this 1940s pattern does it to the Staunton. There are no collar rings, no carved mane, no stepped crown. Each piece is a seamless turned form that reads as one continuous profile from base to finial.

The proportions are the giveaway. A 97mm king on a 35mm base is a ratio of 36 percent, where a conventional Staunton of that height sits between 40 and 43. These are visibly narrower and taller than the pattern they descend from.

Sheesham against boxwood, weighted to 1,050g. It sits with our minimalist chess pieces.

1940s Art Deco chess pieces in sheesham and boxwood

Key features

  • 97mm (3.81 inch) king on a narrow 35mm base, sized for 50mm squares
  • Seamless turned profiles with no collar rings or stepped detail
  • Queen at 89mm sits unusually close to the king in height
  • Sheesham dark side with an open grain and a warm mid brown tone
  • Boxwood light side, hand polished
  • Weighted to 1,050g across the full set
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the Art Deco pattern compares to a conventional Staunton

A Staunton tells you what a piece is through applied detail: the bishop has a mitre slot, the knight has a carved head, the rook has crenellations. Remove that vocabulary and you have to identify pieces by silhouette alone, which is exactly what this set asks of you.

It works because the heights are well separated. King 97, queen 89, bishop 81, knight 71, rook 58, pawn 51. Every piece is a clear step from its neighbour, so the back rank reads as a descending sequence rather than as a row of similar shapes.

Where it costs you is at speed. Scanning for a mitre is faster than scanning for a height, so blitz on this set takes some adjustment. Conventional patterns sit across our Staunton chess pieces.

Why the queen is so close to the king

Eight millimetres separate king and queen here. On a conventional Staunton of the same height the gap is usually twelve to fifteen, and the crown and coronet widen that difference further.

Deco proportion is doing the work. The style favours a tight, rhythmic sequence of forms over dramatic hierarchy, so the royal pair reads as a pair rather than as a monarch and a consort. In play it means you identify the queen by her narrower finial rather than by looking for the tallest piece but one, which is a real adjustment for the first few games.

Sheesham as a dark side

Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with an open, visible grain and a warm mid brown colour that varies from piece to piece. It is not trying to be black and it does not pretend to be ebony.

Against a seamless minimal form that openness matters more than it would on a heavily carved set. With no applied detail to look at, the grain becomes the surface interest, and sheesham has enough figure to carry that on its own.

Choosing a board for a narrow base

The recommendation is 50mm squares, which is tight by modern standards but correct for a 35mm base. Going up to 55mm leaves the pieces looking marooned, because slim forms do not fill a large square the way a wide Staunton foot does.

A plain board suits this set better than a figured one. The pieces are already relying on grain for their visual interest, and a heavily grained board competes with them. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size.

Our expert take

This is a genuinely uncommon shape in the reproduction market, where nearly everything is a variation on the Staunton. Stripping the detail out and letting the silhouette carry the identification works because the height steps are cleanly separated, and the narrow 35mm base gives the set an elegance that a wide-footed Staunton cannot. Two caveats. It is slower to read at speed until you have played a few games on it, so it is not the obvious choice for blitz. And it wants 50mm squares, which is smaller than most modern boards, so check yours before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 50mm. The base is narrow at 35mm and the pieces look stranded on a larger board.

Are these hard to tell apart in play?

Slower at first, because there is no carved detail to scan for. The heights are cleanly stepped though, so identification by silhouette becomes automatic after a few games.

What is sheesham?

An Indian rosewood with an open visible grain and a warm mid brown colour. It varies from piece to piece, which is part of the character of the timber.

Are the pieces weighted?

Yes, to 1,050g across the full set, with thick green felt on every base.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards are sold separately across our chess boards collection.
