The Piatigorsky Cup was two tournaments, in 1963 and 1966, funded by the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and his wife Jacqueline, herself a strong player who represented the United States at the Olympiad. The second edition brought Fischer, Spassky, Petrosian and Larsen to Santa Monica.
The pattern used there is a Staunton with an unusually tall queen: 98mm against a 108mm king, a gap of only ten millimetres where a conventional set of this height would run fifteen or more. It gives the royal pair an unusual balance.
Three finishes, triple weighted to 2,300g. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.
Two of the three vary on the dark side. Genuine ebony is a true black with almost no visible figure, putting all the attention on the carving. Bud rosewood is a burl figured reddish brown where the timber itself is the interest, and no two pieces come out alike.
The third varies on the light side instead. It pairs the same genuine ebony with antiqued rather than plain boxwood, so the white side arrives already warmed and browned. Against a pitch black opponent that softens the contrast and cuts glare under a lamp considerably.
Dimensions and the 2,300g weight are identical across all three. The wider luxury range sits in our wood chess pieces range.
Ten millimetres separate king and queen here. On most Staunton sets at 108mm the gap is fifteen to twenty, and the crown against the coronet widens the visual difference further.
Bringing the queen up close to the king changes how the back rank reads. The royal pair sits as a pair rather than as a monarch and a consort, and the drop from queen to bishop at 85mm becomes the sharpest step on the rank instead. Some players find that clearer, since the officers separate more distinctly from the royals. Others take a few games to stop reaching for the wrong piece.
A standard weighted set carries a single slug in the base, double weighting increases it, triple increases it again. At 2,300g across 34 pieces this averages roughly 68g, which is among the heaviest sets we carry.
At 108mm that mass is doing structural work as well as giving hand feel. A tall piece carries its bulk high and wants to topple, and the counterweight in the foot is what stops it. Lifting the king for the first time is the moment the price makes sense.
Squares of 60mm, and it is not negotiable at this base width. On 55mm the back rank fills almost completely and the position stops reading cleanly through the timber.
Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size rather than a shelf standard, so confirm what you have before ordering. For the bud rosewood option in particular, a plain board serves the set better than a figured one, because burl grain and board grain compete. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size.
The tall queen is what makes this pattern worth owning rather than just another large Staunton. Ten millimetres from the king gives the royals a balance you do not see elsewhere, and it changes how the back rank reads in a way that grows on you. Triple weighting at 2,300g and a single piece knight put it firmly in the luxury tier and it earns the position. Two things to settle before buying. It needs 60mm squares, a size most people do not own, so check first. And the three options are genuinely different propositions: ebony for the carving, bud rosewood for the figure, and the antiqued light side if you play under a bright lamp and want less glare.

Squares of 60mm. With a 48mm king base a 55mm board fills the back rank almost completely, so this is a requirement rather than a preference.
Two vary the dark side, genuine ebony against bud rosewood. The third pairs the same ebony with antiqued rather than plain boxwood on the light side, which softens the contrast and cuts glare. Dimensions and weight are identical across all three.
That is how the Piatigorsky pattern runs, at 98mm against 108mm. It makes the royals read as a pair and puts the sharpest step on the rank between queen and bishop instead.
The base carries substantially more metal than a standard weighted set. At around 68g a piece these are among the heaviest we sell, which is what keeps a 108mm piece stable.
No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
