Description

Reproduction 1972 Fischer Spassky 96mm Chess Pieces

The knight on this set stands 55mm. The bishop beside it stands 71mm. A sixteen millimetre gap between the two minor officers is not something any modern set would do, and it is the detail that identifies the pattern.

These are the proportions of the equipment used in Reykjavik in 1972, when Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky 12.5 to 8.5 to take the world championship in the most watched chess match ever played. A 96mm king, a 76mm queen, and a knight cut low and forward.

This is version two of the reproduction. Bud rosewood or sheesham against boxwood, 1,150g across 34 pieces, in our reproduction chess pieces.

1972 Fischer Spassky reproduction chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood

Key features

  • 96mm (3.75 inch) king on a 42mm base, sized for 55mm squares
  • Knight at 55mm sitting 16mm below the 71mm bishop, faithful to the pattern
  • Choice of bud rosewood or sheesham, both paired with boxwood
  • 1,150g across the full set, around 34g a piece
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Version 2.0 of the reproduction, revised from the earlier release
  • Weighted with thick green felt on every base
  • Reproduction of the pattern used at the 1972 world championship

How the Fischer Spassky compares to other reproduction chess pieces

Most reproductions are of designs. This one is of a specific event's equipment, and it carries the most recognisable name in twentieth century chess with it.

What separates it visually from every other set in the range is the low knight. Sitting sixteen millimetres below the bishop, it reads almost as a middle rank between the officers and the pawns, and the back rank has a distinctly stepped profile as a result.

The set is otherwise conventional and moderately weighted at 1,150g. If you want the Reykjavik association this is the only way to get it; if you want the heaviest or most ornate reproduction in the range, look further along the reproduction chess pieces.

Sheesham and boxwood 1972 Fischer Spassky reproduction chess pieces

Reykjavik, 1972

The match ran through the summer of 1972 in Reykjavik and drew an audience chess had never had before or since. Fischer lost the first game to a blunder and forfeited the second in a dispute over playing conditions, going two down before he had properly started, then won the championship 12.5 to 8.5.

The equipment became famous with the match. Photographs of those games are among the most reproduced images in the game, and the pattern on the board in them is the one reproduced here, down to the low knight that makes it recognisable at a glance.

A knight sixteen millimetres below the bishop

The Staunton convention puts the knight a few millimetres under the bishop, close enough that they read as a pair. Dropping it to 55mm against 71mm breaks that entirely: the knight sits closer to the 52mm rook than to the bishop.

On the board the effect is a back rank in three tiers rather than two, with the king and queen on top, the bishops below them, and the knights and rooks together at the bottom. Whether that helps or hinders is personal, but it is unmistakable, and it is the reason a photograph of this set is identifiable instantly.

Choosing a board for a 42mm base

The 42mm king base puts this set on 55mm squares, standard tournament sizing. The officers sit on 35mm and the pawn on 32mm, so the board stays open even with the full complement in place.

No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size, and the wider Staunton chess pieces range follows the same convention.

Our expert take

You buy this for the association, and the reproduction earns it by keeping the one proportion that makes the pattern recognisable rather than quietly normalising it. A 55mm knight under a 71mm bishop is the detail, and plenty of sets claiming the Reykjavik name have closed that gap. The caveats are ordinary: at roughly 34g a piece it is moderately weighted rather than heavy, and the three tier back rank takes a game or two to read if you are used to a conventional stepped rank. Neither is a reason not to buy it.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 55mm, standard tournament sizing. That comes from the 42mm king base rather than the 96mm height.

Why is the knight so much shorter than the bishop?

A 16mm gap is what the 1972 pattern had. The knight sits closer in height to the rook than to the bishop, giving the back rank three tiers rather than two. It is the detail that makes the set recognisable.

Which timber should I choose?

Dimensions and carving are identical. Bud rosewood is denser and more figured with a deep reddish brown. Sheesham is a warmer mid brown with more open grain and a lower price.

What is version 2.0?

A revised release of the reproduction, reworked from the earlier version. It is the current specification and the one we stock.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately across our chess boards collection and no storage box ships with the set.
