Description

Reproduction 1972 Reykjavik Championship Sheesham 96mm Chess Pieces

The set used at Reykjavik in 1972 was made by Jaques of London, the firm that produced the original Staunton pattern in 1849. This is a reproduction of that specific set rather than of the general pattern.

That distinction matters, because we carry other 1972 reproductions and they are different turnings. This one runs a 96mm king on a 42mm base with a low 52mm rook and a compact 46mm pawn, all narrower and shorter through the officer group than the sets it sits beside.

Sheesham against boxwood, weighted to 1,230g. It sits among our reproduction chess pieces.

1972 Reykjavik Championship chess pieces in sheesham and boxwood, 96mm king

Key features

  • 96mm (3.7 inch) king on a 42mm base, sized for 50mm squares
  • Reproduces the Jaques set used at the 1972 match, not the general pattern
  • Compact officer group with a 68mm bishop and a low 52mm rook
  • Sheesham dark side with open reddish grain, against boxwood
  • Weighted to 1,230g across the full set, around 36g a piece
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection
  • Hand carved in India

How this differs from our other 1972 reproductions

Three products in our range reference the same match, and they are genuinely different sets rather than the same one relabelled.

This one is the Jaques set as used in Iceland: 96mm king on 42mm, bishop 68mm, knight 64mm, rook 52mm, pawn 46mm, on 35mm officer bases. The Fischer Spassky reproductions carry a wider foot at 37mm with a taller bishop, knight and rook throughout, and the low knight version drops its knight all the way to 55mm.

If you want the set that was actually on the table in Reykjavik, this is it. If you want the pattern in ebonised or in bud rosewood, the others are the place to look. All sit in our Staunton chess pieces.

Reykjavik Championship chess pieces with a 96mm king on a 42mm base

Why the officer group is so compact

Bishop 68, knight 64, rook 52, all on 35mm bases. Against a modern tournament set those are small numbers for a 96mm king, and the rook in particular sits low.

Jaques was working to a nineteenth century sense of proportion that later makers gradually inflated. Officers grew, bases widened, and the modern set arrived at a heavier, more uniform back rank. Reproducing the original faithfully means accepting the older proportions, which look leaner and slightly old fashioned beside a contemporary set, because they are.

Sheesham as the dark side

Sheesham is an Indian rosewood with open, visible grain and a warm mid brown colour that varies from piece to piece and deepens with handling. It is not trying to be black.

For a reproduction of a set that was photographed constantly through three weeks of world championship coverage, the warmth is apt. The Reykjavik images show a set that reads as timber rather than as high contrast black and white, and sheesham captures that better than an ebonised finish would.

Choosing a board

Squares of 50mm, which is standard club sizing and unusually convenient. The 42mm base sits comfortably there, and unlike most of the larger sets in our range this one will work on a board you probably already own.

A plain or lightly figured board suits it. The pieces already carry grain interest on the dark side and a heavily figured board competes. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size. No board is included with these pieces.

Our expert take

The reason to choose this over the other 1972 reproductions we sell is specificity: this reproduces the Jaques set that was actually on the table in Iceland, and its compact officer group with a low 52mm rook is exactly what makes it look right against the match photographs. Sheesham is the correct dark side for the same reason. It is also the most practical of the three, sitting on 50mm squares that most people already own rather than demanding a specialist board. The proportions look lean beside a modern tournament set, which is faithful rather than a shortcoming, but worth expecting.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 50mm, which is standard club sizing. The 42mm king base sits comfortably there, so most existing boards will suit.

How is this different from your other 1972 Fischer Spassky sets?

They are different turnings. This reproduces the Jaques set used at the match, with a compact officer group and a low 52mm rook on 35mm bases. The Fischer Spassky reproductions run wider 37mm bases with taller officers, and one version drops its knight to 55mm.

What is sheesham?

An Indian rosewood with open visible grain and a warm mid brown colour that varies from piece to piece and deepens as it is handled.

Are the pieces weighted?

Yes, to 1,230g across 34 pieces, around 36g a piece, with thick green felt on every base.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
