Russian Zagreb 66mm Chess Pieces

The Russian Zagreb is a small set, and that is the first thing to know about it. The king sits a long way under the scale used for club and tournament play, so the board it goes on matters more than usual.

It is a faithful reproduction of the pieces used at the world chess tournament held in Zagreb in 1959. Two timbers carry the pattern: one dark army in golden rosewood, the other in ebonised boxwood.

Every shape on the board has a simple curve to it and no sharp points anywhere, which makes the pieces comfortable to handle and easy to keep tidy.

The knight is the piece with a look of its own. The rest of the army is calm and even, and the horse is what gives the pattern its character.
