Spartacus is named after the gladiator who led an uprising against the Roman Republic, and the army has one design idea running the whole way through it.
Every piece, from the sovereign down to the pawn, carries twin rings at the base and the same symmetrical profile above them, so the set reads as one family, not six unrelated shapes.
The knights break that symmetry deliberately. Each has a flowing mane and an expressive head, drawn as though caught in motion across the board.
The set is triple weighted, with lead used at the bases to add ballast, and that is what gives it the heft it has in the hand.
We keep it with our staunton chess pieces.
Start at the foot. Twin rings run round the base of every piece and the same profile is repeated up the army, so a pawn looks like a small relation of the king and not a different object entirely.
That consistency is the character of the set. It makes the board look ordered from across a room, and it makes a crowded middlegame easier to read, because the shapes all agree with one another.
The knights are the deliberate exception. The mane flows back and the head has an expression on it, so the horses look like the only thing moving in an otherwise very still army.
The cost of one shape language is the family resemblance that comes with it. Until the set is familiar the middle ranks take a second look, because every shape here is agreeing with every other one.
These pieces suit large boards, with squares of 60mm to 65mm, and the wide end is the one to go for. At the tight end the rank looks denser, with less air around each piece, and a narrower board will not hold the set.
The twin rings are a cut detail and not a colour one, so they show on either timber. What changes is the surface they are cut into, and that is all there is to decide.
Ebony wood is a naturally black timber, so the rings show as shadow on a plain dark body, and the pale boxwood army is where they are easiest to pick out.
Bud rosewood puts colour behind them. The warm red brown of the dark side catches the light across the rings at every base, so the band and the timber are lit together and the detail is softer to follow.
No dimension and no gram of weight moves with the choice, so this is a decision about the room the set will sit in and about nothing you will feel during a game.
Do check your board before ordering. These pieces need a large square, and if yours is cut smaller than the window the only real fix is a new board.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The reason to buy the Spartacus is the consistency.
One shape language, repeated from the king down to the pawn, is what makes a full board look composed instead of cluttered, and this set commits to that idea completely before letting the knights break it.
What you should weigh up is the mass. This is a heavy, costly army that needs a permanent table and a large board, and it will not travel. If you need a set that does, our tournament chess pieces are the place to start.
- Blake Sterling, CEO & Founder, Sterling Chess
Squares of 60mm to 65mm. If the board is not bought yet, buy at the top of that range: the bases here are broad, and at the narrow end the strip of board between one foot and the next gets noticeably tighter.
Two cut rings at the foot of all six shapes, repeated the whole way down the army. They are the signature of the series, and because they run right round the foot they read from any side of the board.
Triple weighted. Lead is added at the bases to increase the ballast, and in play that means a piece settles the instant it lands.
2,560 grams. That is a lot of chessmen to lift, so it is worth deciding where the set is going to live before it arrives.
34 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No. The listing is the chessmen alone and there is no storage box either, so both are separate decisions; the square window is in the specifications below to measure against.
