Description

Tower Series Brass 79mm Chess Pieces

The Tower Series is a set of chessmen made in solid brass and shaped like a row of tower minarets. It is a minimalist design, and there is nothing traditional about the way it sits on a board.

At 79mm this is a short king, but it is not a small one. Every piece comes down on a wide flat foot, so the army takes and holds a board with real authority.

Two finishes split the board. One army is silver and the other is an antique, dark grey brass, so there is never a moment of doubt about which side is which.

Every piece is made by hand, and the shaping is hand work as well. Small differences from one piece to the next are normal here, and they are part of what a handmade set is.

Look for it in our minimalist chess pieces.

Tower Series brass chessmen in silver and antique finishes

Key features

  • A 79mm king in solid brass, standing on a wide foot that gives the whole army a planted look
  • Minimalist tower minaret shapes, drawn for a modern room and for anyone whose taste runs contemporary
  • A silver army facing an antique, dark grey brass army, which keeps the two sides clear at a glance
  • 2,030 grams of brass in a 32 piece army, a great deal of metal for a set standing this short
  • Made by hand, so slight variations between one piece and another are expected and give each set character
  • Genuine brass, which asks for nothing more than a dry cloth and a spot out of direct sunlight
  • 32 chess pieces supplied on their own, with no board and no storage box included in the listing
  • A distinct elegance to the whole army, the sort of design that makes eyes turn the moment it appears

About the pieces

The shapes are the whole proposition. Each piece is a slim tower stepped in towards its top, and the army reads as one idea repeated at a different height for each rank.

That makes it a set you read by outline and height. Give it a game or two and the towers sort themselves out in your head, and after that you stop thinking about it at all.

The feet matter here as much as the outlines. King, queen, bishop and knight all stand on one broad foot, so the back rank crosses the board as an even row with nothing tapering away beneath it.

The handwork shows, and it should. No two pieces here are ever a perfect copy of one another, and the differences are small enough to read as character on a shelf.

A broad foot wants room around it. Measure the squares on the board you play on, hold them against the base figures in the specifications below, and be sure of the fit before you order.

Who this set suits

A modern room is where this one belongs. It was drawn for a contemporary taste, and it looks as settled on a desk or a shelf as it does on a table with a game running.

It suits a player who dislikes fussing with the pieces. Between the wide feet and the weight of the brass, nothing tips, nothing drifts when the table gets knocked, and nothing needs straightening between moves.

It suits someone who likes one idea carried right through. Six shapes, all of them towers, and ranked up the army reads as a single piece of design instead of a cast of characters.

It is not the set for a traditional player. There is no Staunton outline anywhere here, so anyone who wants a familiar army with a horse and a mitre on it should keep looking.

The board is the decision to make before you order. These are the chessmen alone, and a wide foot is fussy about its square, so leave yourself room to buy the right one.

Looking after them is a simple job. Keep the set out of direct sunlight, and dust with a dry soft cloth.

Our expert take

What I like here is what the design refuses to do.

It makes no attempt at tradition, and the discipline in that is the pleasure of it. A row of brass towers on a good board is a striking thing to sit down to, and heavy enough that nobody treats it as an ornament.

If the classic outline is what you actually want, this is not where to look, and our staunton chess pieces will serve you far better.

Frequently asked questions

What square size do these pieces need?

Match the board to the feet. Take the base figures from the table below, check them against the squares you own, and buy once you can see clear board around each piece.

What are the pieces made from?

Solid brass. The light army takes a silver finish and the dark one an antiqued grey, so the two sides stay clear at the far end of a table.

How heavy is the set?

2,030 grams, all told. Decide where the set will live before it arrives, because this is not an army you will want to pack away after every game.

Why do the pieces vary slightly from one to another?

Because they are handmade. No two are ever an exact match, and on shapes as plain as these the small differences are easy to spot and easy to like.

How many pieces are supplied?

32 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Check the board you buy against the base sizes in the specifications below.
