Description

12 Inch Magnetic Travel 60mm Chess Set with 30cm Board and Drawer

A travel set has one job: survive being carried and still be playable when it lands. This one does it with magnets. Every piece carries a magnetic stud in the base and the board has an iron sheet concealed under the playing surface, so the position holds through a bump, a train, or a bag going sideways.

The whole thing is one object: a 30cm board on top of a shallow case, with a drawer in the side that takes the pieces in cut slots, so there is nothing separate to lose. Sixty millimetres at the king.

Four timbers are offered and the construction is identical across all of them. They sit among our wood chess pieces range.

Magnetic travel chess set in sheesham and maple with a 60mm king

Key features

  • 60mm (2.37 inch) king on a 22mm base, sized for the 30cm board
  • Magnetic studs in every piece and a concealed iron sheet under the playing surface
  • 30cm board over a 4.5cm case with a side drawer for the pieces
  • Choice of sheesham, padauk, genuine ebony or rosewood on the dark side
  • Maple light squares on the board, natural boxwood on the light pieces
  • 32 playing pieces plus two spare queens for pawn promotion
  • 2,042g for the whole set, board and pieces together
  • Felted piece bases, so the pieces sit quietly and do not mark the surface

How the four options differ

The construction is identical across all four. Same 60mm king on a 22mm base, same folding 30cm board with the same drawer, same magnets, same 2,042g on the scales. Only the dark timber changes.

Sheesham is a warm mid brown with open grain, and it is the most affordable of the four. Padauk is redder and more strongly figured. Genuine ebony is dense black with a very fine grain. Rosewood sits between sheesham and padauk, darker and closer grained than either.

Choose on colour alone, because nothing else about the set changes. Full sized versions of these timbers run across our chess pieces collection.

How the magnets actually work

Magnetic travel sets come in two kinds. The cheap approach puts a magnet in each piece and a magnet in each square, which works but drags the pieces sideways into alignment and feels dead in the hand. The better approach, used here, puts a steel sheet under the whole playing surface and a single magnet in each piece.

The result is that a piece holds wherever you put it rather than snapping to a grid, so the set still plays like a normal set. The hold is firm enough to survive a bag being carried and a table being knocked, and light enough that lifting a piece feels natural rather than like pulling it free.

The board and the drawer

The board and its case are a single object measuring 30cm by 30cm by 4.5cm. A drawer runs into the side and the pieces sit in cut slots inside it, so nothing travels loose in a bag and nothing arrives with three pawns missing.

The playing surface is timber rather than the printed card or plastic that most sets at this size use, and the case underneath is what carries the iron sheet the magnets work against. Shut, it is compact enough to sit in a carry on or a desk drawer between games.

What 60mm pieces are and are not for

Sixty millimetres is small. These pieces sit in the hand rather than standing over the board, and the carving is simplified accordingly: the knight is a clean profile rather than a detailed one, and the officers are distinguished by finial rather than by elaborate cutting. That is the correct decision at this scale, because fine detail on a 60mm piece just looks fussy.

Buy it as a second set for travel, a desk, a holiday house or a hospital stay, not as a replacement for a full sized set at home. Thirty centimetres is a smaller playing surface than any other set we carry. If you want a timber travel set closer to full size, the compact 37cm sets sit within our chess sets collection.

Our expert take

Most travel chess is plastic on printed card, and the difference here is that both halves are timber and the magnets are done properly. A steel sheet under the surface with a single magnet per piece means the pieces hold where you put them instead of snapping to a grid, which is the difference between a set you actually play on and a novelty. The drawer matters more than it sounds: a travel set that keeps its pieces inside itself is a travel set that still has all its pieces in two years. Be realistic about the scale. At 60mm this is a genuinely small set and the carving is simplified to suit, so it is a companion to a full sized set rather than a substitute for one. Between the timbers, take the sheesham unless you have a reason to want black.
