These chessmen are a reproduction of the chess pieces used for the 2016 Sinquefield Cup. The listing comes two ways, in bud rosewood or in ebony, with boxwood as the light army on both.
The knight takes its inspiration from the famous Imperial design of chessmen, and it is the man a hand goes to first when the lid comes off.
The rest is a Staunton army in good order. The king stands 98mm with everything scaled beneath him, so nothing on the board needs explaining before a game starts.
The set has been traditionally triple weighted, the mass sitting low in the base of every man, and you feel it the moment a piece comes down on a square.
It is listed with our reproduction chess pieces.
This is the 2016 Sinquefield Cup design, and around the knight the shapes are ordinary Staunton, so anybody who has played before will recognise every piece the moment the set comes out.
The triple weighting is the other half of the character. The mass is in the base, which gives you a piece with a low centre that stops dead where you put it down.
All 34 pieces together come to 1,580 grams, and that is weight you notice over a whole evening. Pieces stand where they are placed, and a hand going in for a knight does not disturb the men either side of it.
The dark side is the only thing that moves between the two options. Bud rosewood is the warmer, a red brown with figure running through it; ebony is the darker, black in the timber itself. Boxwood is the light army on both.
These pieces suit boards with squares of 55mm to 60mm. That is a larger square than an army of this height usually calls for, so check what is under your own set rather than assuming it will suit.
Between the two there is one design in two dark timbers. Every figure agrees, from the height of the king to the weight of the whole army, so nothing decided here changes how the set plays.
Bud rosewood is the warm answer. It is a natural timber, red brown and figured, and against the pale boxwood it gives a board that looks settled before the first move is made.
Ebony is the hard answer. It is dark in the timber itself, so the two armies separate at a glance and a position stays legible under a low lamp.
There is no wrong choice here. Take the rosewood if you want warmth on the table, and the ebony if you would sooner the two sides read apart from across the room.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
The knight is what sells this set to me. It takes its cue from the Imperial chessmen, and once a board is standing it is the man my eye keeps going back to.
Underneath it the set is serious. The triple weighting is honest, the army has real mass on a table, and it reproduces a design that was in play at the 2016 Sinquefield Cup.
The board is the thing to settle first, and I would not skate over it. This army asks for a big square, so put a tape across what you already own before you order anything.
It is not a quiet army either. The knight is the loud thing in it, so anybody after a plain army with no flourish will do better among our minimalist chess pieces.

It reproduces the chessmen of the 2016 Sinquefield Cup, in bud rosewood or ebony against a boxwood light army.
Its shape is inspired by the Imperial design of chessmen. Everything standing around it follows ordinary Staunton lines.
Squares of 55mm to 60mm. This is a large square, so measure the board you have before ordering and make sure it sits inside that range.
1,580 grams for the full army, and the grade is Triple Weighted. You feel that in the hand from the first piece you pick up.
34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
