Description

Alban Knight Staunton 102mm Chess Pieces

The Alban Series is built on simplicity. It has been expertly carved out for stability, and there is nothing on any piece that a hand has to work its way around.

The knights are where the character sits. They are carved so that a player feels no sharp edges on the horse, yet the knight's hair keeps the set distinctive.

Everything else stays quiet. The craftsmanship and the finish are the point here, not ornament, and the army reads cleanly the moment it is standing on the board.

The king reaches 102mm and the set is adequately weighted for proper heft and balance. Two dark timbers carry the design, and both of them are weighted.

Find it among our wood chess pieces.

Alban Knight Staunton chess pieces in ebonised boxwood and boxwood

Key features

  • An Alban Staunton carved for simplicity and stability, with no fussy detail anywhere in the army
  • Knights carved so that no sharp edge meets the hand, the knight's hair giving the horse its character
  • Craftsmanship and finish carrying this design, rather than ornament laid over the top of the shapes
  • Weighted chessmen coming to 1,170 grams, with enough heft to hold a piece where it is set down
  • A king of 102mm with a wide foot, so the top of the square window is the size to aim at
  • A dark side in ebonised boxwood or in golden rosewood, with boxwood opposite on both options
  • An easy set to give, and an easy one to leave standing as the daily go-to board at home
  • Thirty four chessmen arrive on their own, with no board beneath them and nothing to store them in

About the pieces

The Alban is a simple Staunton and it is unapologetic about that. Simplicity and stability were the brief, and the whole army follows it without a flourish anywhere.

The knights carry the design. On an army this plain the work falls to the horse, and this one is drawn to be recognised rather than admired.

A spare queen for each side is packed in with the army. Promote in a long game and there is a proper queen to reach for rather than a rook stood on its head.

The weighting is judged rather than heavy. There is proper heft and balance in the hand, enough to hold a piece where it lands without turning a long game into hard work.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm. A broad foot under a king of this height means reaching for the bigger square where you can; the tight end of that range leaves him almost no daylight.

Ebonised or golden rosewood

Two options and one design. Height, shape and mass hold steady across both dark timbers, so the whole decision is about colour.

Ebonised boxwood is the harder edged of the two. The dark side is boxwood brought to a near black, and it stands against the pale army with the contrast at its strongest.

Golden rosewood is the warmer answer. It is a brown timber with figure running through it, and it makes the set look at home in a room with timber already in it.

Both are photographed on this listing. Compare them there and choose whichever colour you prefer, because nothing in the way they play separates the two.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

What I would tell a buyer about the Alban is how it feels in the hand. Smooth shapes, no edges to catch, honest weight: it is a set you end up handling for the pleasure of it.

That makes it a good gift and a better daily set. It does not need an occasion, and it will sit on a side table waiting for the next game without looking like an ornament.

Be careful with the board. This king stands on a wide base, so the smaller end of the range crowds the back rank and the largest square it allows is the one to buy.

If detail is what you are after, this is not the set. The Alban is deliberately plain, and anyone who wants a heavily worked army should begin in our luxury chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Alban knight like?

Simple and smooth. The horse is carved with no sharp edges on it anywhere, so a hand finds nothing to catch on when a piece is picked up in the middle of a game.

What board squares do these need?

Squares of 50mm to 55mm, with the bigger figure the better buy. This king is wide across the foot, and the smaller square leaves hardly any board visible beside him.

How heavy is the set?

1,170 grams. The grade is Weighted, and both timbers come out at the same figure, so neither option is the heavier army.

Would this make a good gift?

Yes. It makes an excellent gift for a chess player, and it is just as easy to justify as the daily go-to set for your own table.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
