Description

Arabian Knight Artisan Staunton 107mm Chess Pieces

The Arabian is the horse breed everything else was bred from, and the two features that identify it are a dished profile and a high carried tail. The knight on this set is cut to catch the first of those, with a sweeping mane and a head shape drawn from the breed rather than from the generic Staunton horse.

Around it sits a properly proportioned luxury Staunton: a 107mm king on a 49mm base, triple weighted to 1,900g, with turned collar rings throughout.

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Arabian Knight Artisan Staunton chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 107mm king

Key features

  • 107mm (4.2 inch) king on a wide 49mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Knight cut to the Arabian head shape with a sweeping mane
  • Available in genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood
  • Triple weighted to 1,900g across the full set, around 56g a piece
  • Turned collar rings on the pieces with thick green felts
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Identical dimensions and weight across both options
  • Hand carved and hand polished in India

How the two timbers compare

Genuine ebony reads as near black with almost no figure, which on a set built around its knight is an argument in its favour: nothing in the timber competes with the carving.

Bud rosewood is a burl figured reddish brown with swirling darker grain, so each piece carries its own pattern. It makes a warmer board and it suits a set that is going to be looked at as much as played on.

Dimensions, the 1,900g weight and the price are identical across both, so the decision is entirely about appearance. The wider range sits in our wood chess pieces range.

What makes a knight Arabian

Most Staunton knights descend from the Elgin Marbles horse: a heavy jaw, a short thick neck and a low carried head. It is a powerful shape and it has almost nothing to do with any living breed.

An Arabian is the opposite animal. The profile dishes inward below the eye rather than running straight, the muzzle is fine, and the mane carries longer and looser. Cutting that into a chess knight means more material removed around the head and a more delicate transition into the neck, which is slower work and more fragile once finished.

Triple weighting at 1,900g

Around 56g a piece is substantial without being extreme. It sits below the 2,300g sets in the range and well above a mid tier tournament set, which for a 107mm piece is close to the sweet spot.

The reason is handling. A very heavy set at this height is impressive to lift and tiring to move repeatedly, and a light one at this height topples. At 1,900g on a 49mm base these are planted enough to survive a knocked table and light enough to play a long game with.

Sweeping Arabian mane on the knight of the ebony Arabian Knight chess pieces

Sizing a board for a 49mm base

Squares of 60mm. A 49mm base on a 55mm square leaves barely three millimetres of visible board around the king, and the back rank becomes a wall of timber.

Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size rather than a shelf standard, so confirm what you have before ordering. For the bud rosewood option a plain board is the better pairing, because burl figure and board figure compete. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size.

Our expert take

The knight is the reason this set exists and it holds up to close inspection: the dished Arabian profile is genuinely cut rather than suggested, and the mane carries loose in a way the standard Staunton horse never does. The weighting is well judged too. At 1,900g it is planted without being the sort of weight that makes a long game tiring, which is a better balance at 107mm than the heavier sets manage. The usual constraint applies and it is not negotiable: 60mm squares, which most people do not own. Settle the board before you settle the timber.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. At a 49mm king base a 55mm board leaves almost no visible square around the piece.

What is different about an Arabian knight?

The head is cut to the Arabian breed profile, which dishes inward below the eye rather than running straight, with a finer muzzle and a longer looser mane. Most Staunton knights follow the heavy jawed Elgin Marbles horse instead.

What is the difference between the two timbers?

Genuine ebony is near black with almost no figure, which keeps the attention on the carving. Bud rosewood is a figured burl where the timber is the interest. Dimensions, weight and price are identical.

How heavy is the set?

1,900g across 34 pieces, triple weighted, around 56g a piece.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
