Description

Artisan Knight Handcrafted Luxury Wooden 114mm Chess Pieces

The knight is the only piece on a chess set that cannot be turned on a lathe. Everything else is a profile spun against a metal guide; the knight has to be cut by hand, one at a time, and it is where the difference between a good workshop and an ordinary one shows up. This set is named for that piece.

The carving runs deep on the mane, the muzzle and the ears, with enough relief that the head reads clearly from across a table rather than dissolving into a smooth lump. Around it sits a full luxury Staunton: a 114mm king on a wide 48mm base, and 2,120g of double weighted timber across 34 pieces.

Two dark timbers are offered, genuine ebony and bud rosewood, both against natural boxwood. They sit near the top of our luxury chess pieces collection.

Artisan Knight luxury chess pieces in bud rosewood and natural boxwood

Key features

  • 114mm (4.48 inch) king on a 48mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Choice of genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both paired with natural boxwood
  • 2,120g in ebony and 2,184g in bud rosewood, around 62g a piece
  • Hand carved knights with deep relief across the mane, muzzle and ears
  • Double weighted with thick green felt on every base
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens, so pawn promotion never interrupts a game
  • Semi gloss hand polish that lifts the grain without a plastic looking shine
  • Identical carving and dimensions in both timbers, so only the wood changes

How the Artisan Knight compares to other luxury chess pieces

Most sets in this price bracket compete on timber. Put ebony against ebony and the differences narrow quickly, because the wood is the same and the turning is guided by the same metal profiles. What actually separates one luxury set from another is the hand work, and there is only one piece with any real hand work in it.

The Artisan Knight spends its budget there. The trade off is that the rest of the set is restrained: clean collars, a plain mitre on the bishop, no fluting or added ornament. If you want a set that is decorative in every piece, this is not it.

What you get instead is a back rank with genuine presence and a knight worth looking at closely. Compare it against the rest of the luxury chess pieces collection before deciding.

Ebony and natural boxwood Artisan Knight chess pieces with a 114mm king

Why a 48mm base matters more than a 114mm king

King height is the number every listing leads with, and it is the less useful of the two. The base diameter is what determines whether a set fits a board, whether it stands up to a knocked table, and how the back rank looks when eight pieces sit side by side.

At 48mm the king base here is generous for a 114mm piece. The rook and knight sit on 42mm, the pawns on 35mm, and the whole set reads as planted rather than spindly. It is also why these need 60mm squares rather than the 55mm most tournament sets use.

Ebony and bud rosewood, and how to choose

Genuine ebony is close grained, dense and nearly uniform in colour, which is exactly what carved detail wants: an edge cut into ebony stays crisp because there is no soft early wood for the chisel to tear. It is the reason the ebony version weighs 2,120g without any additional ballast being needed in the larger pieces.

Bud rosewood is the more interesting timber to look at. It carries visible figure and a warm reddish brown that shifts under different light, and at 2,184g it is fractionally heavier. Against natural boxwood it gives lower contrast than ebony does, which some players prefer and some find harder to read at speed.

Choosing a board for 60mm squares

The 48mm king base sets the requirement. A base should sit at roughly three quarters of the square width, which puts this set on 60mm squares. On a 55mm board the back rank will look crowded and the king and queen will very nearly touch their neighbours.

No board ships with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size so you can match the 60mm requirement directly rather than working it back from the overall dimensions.

Our expert take

The case for this set is narrow and honest: it is a well proportioned luxury Staunton whose budget has gone into the one piece that cannot be mass produced. A 48mm base under a 114mm king is properly generous, and at roughly 62g a piece it has the heft that people paying at this level expect. The caveat is that everything other than the knight is deliberately plain, so a buyer looking for ornament across the whole set will feel short changed. We would put it in front of someone who has looked closely at a lot of knights and knows what a good one costs.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. That comes from the 48mm king base rather than the 114mm height. A standard 55mm tournament board will leave the back rank crowded.

Which timber should I choose?

Carving, dimensions and finish are identical, so it is a question of looks and a small weight difference. Ebony is near black and uniform, giving high contrast against the boxwood. Bud rosewood is a warm reddish brown with visible figure and slightly lower contrast.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.

How heavy are they in the hand?

Around 62g a piece across the set, which is firmly in double weighted territory. The pieces sit down with a solid thud and are not easily knocked over.

Are the knights identical to each other?

Close, but not identical. Turned pieces are guided by metal profiles so they match precisely; knights are cut by hand, so small variation between the four is expected and is a sign the carving is genuine. The same is true across our wood chess pieces range.
