The Bath is a knight led Staunton, and the horse is the reason the pattern exists.
Its posture is upright and regal rather than lunging, the head carried high on a long neck, and it is the piece a collector will look at longest.
Whether the set ends up on a table to be played on or in a cabinet to be looked at, the knight is what you keep coming back to.
Around it the outline is traditional Staunton and deliberately quiet, so nothing else on the board competes with the horse.
The king comes up to 118mm and the army is triple weighted. Look for it in our staunton chess pieces.
Take the knight first, because everything else here is in service of it. It is sophisticated rather than showy, and there is enough of it standing above the base to give the piece real presence.
Every piece is hand carved and hand turned, and the knight is where you can see it. The mane, the muzzle and the set of the jaw are all hand work.
Triple weighting does the rest. At this height there is a lot of piece standing above the board, and the mass keeps everything planted when a hand or a sleeve catches the table.
It also changes how a game feels. Heavy pieces get set down deliberately and stop dead, and after an hour you stop thinking about the pieces and think about the position instead.
Match this set to a large board, with squares of 55mm to 65mm, and aim at the upper end. At the tight end the opening rank packs together with no air around the bases, and under it the set will not fit.
The horse is the reason to care which timber you take. On ebony it is cut into a body that holds as black across a room, so what you get is the line of the carving and the shape it makes, and very little else.
On bud rosewood the same carving sits in a red brown body against a pale army, so the two sides read as colour before they read as contrast, and the horse has more going on in it up close.
The two differ a little in mass, with the ebony option the heavier of the pair, though it is not a difference you would feel in a single piece. Both figures are in the specifications below.
What you will feel is the total. Either way this is a heavy army, and it is happiest left standing on one table between games.
So check the squares on your own board before ordering, and if they are undersized, treat a new board as part of the purchase rather than as an afterthought.
Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
Choose ebony if you want the starkest separation between the two sides, and bud rosewood if the colour of the timber is half the reason you are buying a wooden set at all.
The Bath is a single idea executed properly, and the idea is the horse.
Buying it for anything other than the knight would be missing the point, and buying it for the knight is a perfectly good reason to buy a chess set.
The honest caveat is that this is a tall, heavy set on a wide foot, so it needs a large board and somewhere permanent to stand. If you want something lighter or smaller, our tournament chess pieces are the better shelf to start on.

Anything from 55mm to 65mm, with the top of that range the one to choose if the board is still to buy. The bases are wide, so the upper end leaves a ring of board around each piece. The tight end closes those gaps up.
Because it carries the whole design. It is the one piece here allowed to be elaborate, and it is where the hand work concentrates.
Almost. The ebony option is slightly the heavier, and both figures are listed in the specifications below. Both are triple weighted and both use the same boxwood light army, so nothing about play changes.
Yes, triple weighted in both options. The pieces land and stay put, and the army does not shift about if the table gets knocked.
34 chess pieces. What is in the box is listed in full below.
No. It is the chessmen only. There is no board and no storage box in the parcel, so both are separate purchases.
