Bauhaus Reproduced 50mm Chess Pieces

This is a faithful reproduction of the chess set Josef Hartwig designed at the Bauhaus. Each piece is a geometric symbol for the job it does on the board.

Cubes, cylinders and balls do the work of the army. The thinking behind the design was that those shapes should lead you move by move to checkmate, so a piece tells you what it can do by its form.

The original was sold in two versions, a daily use one and a handmade luxury one. This army follows the luxury version, and it arrives in a choice of three timbers.

The king stands 50mm, which is a small scale, so the board you put it on matters more here than usual. The full array is 32 pieces.

About the pieces

Set it out and the board reads as a diagram. Nothing here is figurative, so there is no crown, no mitre and no horse to look for, only clean geometric solids standing in the ranks.

That does take a little getting used to. Once the shapes click you follow the position quickly, because each symbol says plainly what the piece in front of you is able to do.

They are small things to handle, neat and light, and the whole army lifts away in one go. Anyone who wants real weight and presence in the fist will want to look elsewhere.

The forms themselves are unfussy, with no fine points and no thin stems anywhere, which keeps the set easy to tidy up and easy to store after a game.

These pieces suit small boards, with squares of 40mm to 45mm, and the tighter end of that window flatters it most. Go much wider and the army starts to look lost on the square.

Choosing between the three timbers

Bud rosewood puts a rich reddish brown on the dark side. Against the boxwood opposite it the contrast stays warm, and the board never looks severe.

Ebonised boxwood is the formal one. The dark side is brought to a near black, which gives the sharpest separation between the two armies when you look at the board from a distance.

Golden rosewood, which parts of the trade call sheesham, is the warmest of the three. Its dark side sits at honey brown, closer in tone to the boxwood facing it.

Because the forms are abstract, contrast does real work on this set. If you want the two sides to separate at a glance, take the ebonised. If you want warmth on the table, take either rosewood.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.
