British Staunton 95mm Chess Pieces

A 95mm king, weighted. The British Staunton is the kind of set that gets used, not admired.

It suits a table that gets used. The proportions are the traditional ones, every shape on the board is one you already know, and the pieces sit comfortably in the hand over a long session.

Two dark timbers are offered, golden rosewood or ebonised boxwood, each of them facing the same pale boxwood across the board. Nothing else changes between them.

The complete set comes to 1,070 grams. That is enough for the weighting to hold each piece down through a game without the army becoming a chore to put away afterwards.

Golden rosewood is the warmer choice. It runs brown with its grain on show, so in daylight the dark army reads as a colour and the two sides part company without going black and white.

Ebonised boxwood is the higher contrast choice, brought to a near black. Against the pale side the armies separate cleanly, which helps under a single lamp or in a photograph.
