Description

California Chrome Staunton Series Ebony 108mm Chess Pieces

California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness in 2014 and was American Horse of the Year twice. The knight on this set is carved after him, which puts it in the same family as the other racehorse patterns we carry.

The proportions are generous throughout. A 108mm king on a 46mm base, a 92mm queen, and 2,100g of triple weighting, which is heavy even for this height.

Genuine ebony against boxwood, with thick green felts. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.

California Chrome Staunton Series chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood

Key features

  • 108mm (4.25 inch) king on a 46mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Knight carved after California Chrome, twice American Horse of the Year
  • Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark side, not ebonised boxwood
  • Triple weighted to 2,100g across the full set, around 62g a piece
  • Rook at 62mm sits notably low against a 79mm knight
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection
  • Hand carved and hand polished in India

How this compares to the other racehorse patterns

We carry several sets whose knights are cut after named horses, and they are not interchangeable. Red Rum is a steeplechaser and its knight is caught mid gallop, head low and forward. Adios was a harness racer, and the Arabian Knight follows a breed rather than an individual.

California Chrome was a flat racer, and the carving reflects it: the head sits higher and the neck is more upright than a jumping horse's, which reads as alert rather than straining.

Dimensionally this is the heaviest of the group at 2,100g on a 46mm base. If you are choosing between them, the knight is the whole decision, because the underlying Staunton architecture is broadly common. All sit in our wood chess pieces range.

The low rook

At 62mm the rook sits well below the 79mm knight and 85mm bishop, a gap of 17mm from the bishop where most sets at this height run 12 to 14.

Dropping the rook flattens the corners of the board and pushes visual weight toward the centre of the back rank, where the royals and officers are. It also makes the rook unmistakable, since nothing else is anywhere near that height. The trade is presence: a low rook has less authority on an open file than a tall one, which is purely an aesthetic complaint rather than a practical one.

2,100g at 108mm

Around 62g a piece puts this among the heavier sets we carry, and at 108mm that weight is doing structural work as much as it is giving hand feel.

A tall piece carries its mass high and wants to topple, and the counterweight in the foot is what stops it. Combined with the 46mm base, the result is a set that stays put under a knocked table and lands with a solid note rather than a click. It is the clearest physical difference between this and a mid range set at the same height.

Sizing a board

Squares of 60mm. The 46mm base is the driver rather than the height, and on a 55mm board the back rank fills too completely for the position to read cleanly.

Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size and worth confirming before ordering. Given how much detail sits in the knight, a plain or lightly figured board serves the set better than a heavily grained one. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size.

Our expert take

Of the racehorse patterns we stock, this is the one to pick if you want weight. At 2,100g on a 46mm base it is planted in a way the lighter sets in the family are not, and the ebony is genuine rather than dyed. The knight is properly carved and the upright flat racer posture is a real departure from the low, straining heads on the jumping horse sets, so the choice between them is a genuine one rather than marketing. The low 62mm rook is the quirk to notice: it flattens the corners of the board, which some people like and some do not. And it wants 60mm squares.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. The 46mm king base drives that rather than the 108mm height.

Is this genuine ebony or ebonised wood?

Genuine ebony heartwood on the dark pieces, not boxwood dyed black.

How does the knight differ from your other racehorse sets?

California Chrome was a flat racer, so the head sits higher and the neck is more upright. The steeplechaser and harness patterns carve a lower, more forward head instead.

How heavy is the set?

2,100g across 34 pieces, triple weighted, around 62g a piece, which is among the heavier sets we carry.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
