Description

CB Bridle Series Luxury 107mm Chess Pieces

Bishop and knight both stand at 84mm on this set, exactly level, which flattens the officer rank in a way most Staunton patterns avoid. It is the first thing you notice when the board is set up.

Everything else about the 2016 Bridle Series is scaled generously. A 107mm king on a 49mm base, a 95mm queen, and 2,300g of triple weighting, which puts it among the heaviest sets we carry.

Genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.

CB Bridle Series chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 107mm king

Key features

  • 107mm (4.21 inch) king on a wide 49mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Bishop and knight both at 84mm, giving a level officer rank
  • Available in genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood
  • Triple weighted to 2,300g across the full set, around 68g a piece
  • Turned collar rings on the pieces with thick green felts
  • Queen at 95mm sits close under the 107mm king
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Identical dimensions and weight across both options

How the two timbers compare

Genuine ebony gives a near black dark side with almost no visible figure, so the attention falls entirely on the carving and the profile. It is the traditional luxury choice and the safer one.

Bud rosewood is a burl figured timber with a reddish ground and swirling darker grain, and because burl grain runs in every direction no two pieces are alike. It reads as wood first and shape second.

Dimensions, the 2,300g weight and the price are identical across both, so this is purely about appearance. Both sit in our wood chess pieces range.

A level officer rank

On a conventional Staunton the officers step down cleanly: bishop, then knight, then rook. Here bishop and knight are both 84mm, so two of the three sit at exactly the same height.

That removes a height cue and forces you to read the head instead, which takes a few games to become automatic. What it gives back is a calmer, more horizontal back rank, and a knight that stands taller relative to its neighbours than usual, which suits a set whose knight carries the detail.

Triple weighting at 2,300g

Around 68g a piece puts this level with the heaviest sets in the range. At 107mm that mass is doing real work: a tall piece carries its bulk high and wants to topple, and the counterweight in the foot is what holds it.

The 49mm base compounds the effect. Wide foot plus low mass produces pieces that are genuinely difficult to knock over, and that land with a solid note rather than a click. It is the clearest physical difference between this and a mid range set at the same height.

Bishop and knight both at 84mm on the CB Bridle Series chess pieces

Sizing a board for a 49mm base

Squares of 60mm. On 55mm a 49mm base leaves almost no visible board between neighbouring pieces and the back rank reads as one continuous mass of timber.

Sixty millimetre boards are a specialist size, so confirm what you have before ordering rather than after. For the bud rosewood option a plain board is the better pairing, since burl figure and board figure compete. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size.

Our expert take

This is a lot of set for the money at the luxury end: 2,300g of triple weighting on a 49mm base gives it a planted, substantial feel that nothing lighter matches, and the collar work is properly turned. The thing to decide about is the level officer rank. Bishop and knight both at 84mm looks calmer and reads more horizontally, but it takes away a height cue you have used since you learned the game, and some players never warm to it. The usual constraint applies: 60mm squares, which most people do not own, so settle the board question first.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 60mm. At a 49mm king base a 55mm board leaves almost no visible square between neighbouring pieces.

Why are the bishop and knight the same height?

The Bridle pattern levels them at 84mm rather than stepping them. It gives a calmer horizontal officer rank but removes the height cue for telling the two apart, which takes a few games to adjust to.

What is the difference between the two timbers?

Genuine ebony is near black with almost no figure. Bud rosewood is a figured burl where the timber itself is the interest. Dimensions, the 2,300g weight and the price are identical.

What does triple weighted mean?

The base carries substantially more metal than a standard weighted set. At around 68g a piece these are among the heaviest we sell, which is what keeps a 107mm piece stable.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only. Boards sit across our chess boards collection.
