Description

Club Series Light Weighted Plastic 97mm Chess Pieces

Plastic chess pieces have a reputation problem, and most of it is deserved. The cheap ones are hollow, unfelted, moulded with a visible seam and light enough to slide across a board if you breathe on them. This is not one of those.

These are solid plastic, weighted, and felted on every base. At 864g across 34 pieces they average around 25g, which is heavier than several of the wooden sets we carry. The finish carries an anti smudge coating that keeps fingerprints off through a long session.

A 97mm king on a 38mm base, in black against ivory white. It is the entry point to our chess pieces collection and the set to buy when the equipment needs to survive being used hard.

Club Series plastic chess pieces in black and ivory white, 97mm king

Key features

  • 97mm (3.81 inch) king on a 38mm base, sized for 50mm to 60mm squares
  • Solid plastic throughout, not hollow moulded
  • 864g across the full set, around 25g a piece
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection
  • Anti smudge coating that resists fingerprints through a long session
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Black against ivory white for a slightly warmer light side than pure white
  • Built for club, school and blitz use rather than display

How the Club Series compares to our other plastic chess pieces

We carry three plastic sets and they share a 97mm king, so the differences are in weight and in the officer rank. It is worth choosing on those rather than on the name.

This one sits in the middle at 864g. The Player Series is the heaviest at 940g with noticeably taller officers, a 75mm bishop against this set's 66mm, and it is the closest to a wooden tournament set in feel. The International Series is unweighted at 450g, roughly half the weight of this one, and is the budget option for a school or a club that needs numbers.

Choose this one if you want felted, weighted, durable equipment at the lowest sensible price. All three are in our tournament chess pieces range or alongside it.

What light weighted actually means

Plastic sets are sold as unweighted, light weighted or tournament weighted, and the terms are not standardised. What matters is the number: 450g for an unweighted set of this size, around 860g for a light weighted one, and 940g or more for a tournament weighted one.

At 864g this set is squarely light weighted, which in practice means a piece sits down and stays there without being slow to lift. It is enough weight to survive a knocked table and a fast clock press, and not so much that the set feels like a chore over a long tournament day.

Why the coating matters

Uncoated plastic holds fingerprints, and on a light coloured piece they show. Over a three hour session a set that started clean ends up looking grubby, which is the main reason plastic equipment gets replaced long before it wears out.

The anti smudge coating here is applied as a finishing step and it does two jobs: it keeps the surface clean under handling, and it adds a layer of abrasion resistance so the pieces do not scuff white at the edges. Neither is glamorous and both are the difference between equipment that lasts a season and equipment that lasts a decade.

Knight detail on the Club Series light weighted plastic chess pieces

Choosing a board for a 38mm base

The 38mm king base gives a usable range of 50mm to 60mm squares, which is unusually wide. A 50mm board keeps things compact for a club table; a 60mm board suits a school hall where the position needs to be readable from further away.

No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size, and roll up vinyl boards are the usual pairing for a plastic set of this kind.

Our expert take

This is the plastic set I would buy for a club. Solid rather than hollow, felted, and at 864g it is heavier than a couple of the wooden sets in our range, which surprises people. The anti smudge coating is the detail that matters over years rather than months. Two honest limits. It is a working set with no pretensions, so if you want something to look at on a shelf this is not it. And the officers are short, with a 66mm bishop under a 97mm king, so the back rank looks less imposing than the Player Series at the same height.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 50mm to 60mm, from the 38mm king base. 50mm suits a compact club table, 60mm suits a school hall where the position needs to read from further away.

Are these hollow or solid?

Solid plastic throughout, weighted, with thick green felt on every base. Total set weight is 864g, around 25g a piece.

How does this compare to the other two plastic sets?

This one is light weighted at 864g. The Player Series is heavier at 940g with taller officers and feels closest to a wooden tournament set. The International Series is unweighted at 450g and is the budget option. All three share a 97mm king and sit in or near our tournament chess pieces.

What is the anti smudge coating?

A finishing layer that resists fingerprints and adds abrasion resistance, so the light pieces stay clean through a long session and do not scuff at the edges over time.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
