Description

Dal Rossi Walnut Finish 50cm Chess Board With Storage

The Dal Rossi Walnut Finish 50cm Chess Board With Storage is a full-size chess board and a chess box in one. Compartments under the lid hold your chess pieces securely, so the board you play on is also where your set lives between games.

It suits the player who already owns a set of pieces and wants a proper home for them, or anyone who would rather choose their pieces separately than buy a matched set. The warm walnut finish gives it a classic look on a games table or a shelf.

It sits in the Dal Rossi range alongside the brand's flat chess boards, as the option for players who want storage built in.

Key features

  • 50cm (20 inch) chess board with a warm walnut finish
  • Storage compartments under the lid that hold your chess pieces securely
  • 50mm squares sized for a 95mm to 100mm king
  • Clean playing surface with no notation around the edge
  • Sold as the board only, ready to pair with the pieces you choose
  • Designed by Dal Rossi, creating board games since the 1980s

How this board compares to a flat chess board

A flat chess board does one job well, but the pieces still need a box of their own. This board removes that second item: the compartments are part of the board itself, so there is nothing separate to store, lose or match.

If you already have a storage box you like, a flat board is the simpler choice, and our chess boards collection covers both styles side by side.

Designed by Dal Rossi

Dal Rossi has been creating board games since the 1980s, with Italian designers and skilled artisans working together on its designs. That approach shows in the details here: a warm walnut finish and storage that is built into the board rather than added as an afterthought.

The brand's focus is classic games done properly, from chess sets and boards to backgammon and checkers, and this board brings the playing surface and the storage box together in one piece.

Storage built into the board

The compartments are the reason to choose this board. They sit under the lid, so your chess pieces go straight back into the board they are played on and the set stays complete and tidy between games.

It also makes the board easy to keep out on display. With the pieces stored inside, there is no second box on the shelf and nothing to go looking for when it is time to set up.

Choosing pieces for a 50cm board

The board measures 50cm (20 inches) across with 50mm squares, and the playing surface carries no notation, so nothing competes with the pieces. It is best matched with a king of 95mm to 100mm, as long as the king's base takes up no more than 80 percent of the square. On this board, that means a king base of 40mm or less.

Browse our chess pieces collection to find a set in that size range, from classic Staunton designs to weighted tournament pieces.

Our expert take

“Building the storage into the board is what earns this one its place: a 50cm walnut finish board that also keeps your pieces safe is a tidy solution for anyone who plays at home. The caveat is that it is sold as the board only, so budget for a set of pieces if you do not already own one. It suits players who have pieces they love, or who want to choose their own.”
