Description

Exclusive Alban Staunton 99mm Chess Pieces

The Alban is a Staunton with everything unnecessary taken out of it. The shapes are simple, they are carved out to ensure stability, and the whole army is built to be handled rather than admired from a distance.

The knights are where the design signs its name. The hair on the mane gives the horse a profile you would know anywhere, and on an army this plain it is the one thing asking to be looked at.

The king stands 99mm. A spare queen of each colour ships with the army, so a promotion is played out properly rather than improvised with a rook stood on its head.

Two timbers carry the pattern. Bud rosewood takes the dark side on one option and rosewood on the other, and boxwood is the light army in both cases.

You will find it shelved with our wood chess pieces.

Key features

  • The Alban series is carved out to ensure simplicity and stability, with nothing on it done for effect
  • Simple, stylish knights carved so that no edge on the horse is sharp under a playing hand
  • The Bud Rosewood option is a Weighted build, and its army comes to 1,343 grams on the scales
  • The hair on the knight is the signature of the pattern and makes this a distinctive set to own
  • The Rosewood option is a Triple Weighted build, with an army reading 1,312 grams all told
  • Boxwood makes the light side on both timbers, smooth to the touch and even in colour across the army
  • A spare queen of each colour is included, so both players can promote without borrowing from the box
  • The chessmen ship alone: no board underneath the army, and nothing provided to store it in

About the pieces

The Alban has been expertly carved out to ensure simplicity and stability. Nothing in the army is decorated for its own sake, and each piece announces what it is from the far side of the board.

The knights are carved in such a way that a player feels no sharp edge anywhere on the horse. Pick one up in the middle of a game and there is nothing to catch a finger or a sleeve.

The mane is the one piece of character the design allows itself. The knight's hair gives the horse a profile that belongs to this pattern alone, and it is the detail the Alban is known by.

Bud rosewood on one option and rosewood on the other, both warm and both with grain running through them. Boxwood stands opposite on both, pale and close in the grain, and the contrast is easy on the eye.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 50mm to 55mm. The king's foot is wide relative to the height he stands at, so the fit gets tight at the bottom of that window. Take the largest square you can.

Choosing your timber

Both timbers share one pattern drawn at one scale. The shapes do not change, the proportions do not change, and the knight is the same knight on either side of the choice.

Bud rosewood is a timber with figure in it. The colour moves across a piece, the grain is visible from a chair, and an army of it looks alive under a lamp in the evening.

Rosewood is the quieter surface of the two. It reads as one deep warm brown from playing distance, and it lets the outline of each piece do the work instead of the grain.

Boxwood is the constant. Both options put it on the light side, pale and close grained, and it is the timber that makes the hair on the knight legible from the far end of the board.

Looking after them is the same simple job whichever you choose. Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

Our expert take

The hand is what sells this one. The Alban is a set you end up handling more than you look at, and nothing about the way it is shaped makes you careful when you reach for a piece.

The knight is the reason to choose it over a plain Staunton. Same discipline, same restraint, and then that mane arrives and gives the army a face without upsetting anything else in it.

The catch is the board, and I would not gloss over it. This king has a broad foot, so at the tight end of his window the back rank closes right up and a hand has to pick its way in.

If what you are after is ornament and detail, this is not that set. The Alban is restrained on purpose, so anyone shopping for decoration should start instead in our luxury chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What board squares do these need?

Squares of 50mm to 55mm, and go as large as that window allows. At the top of it there is visible board around the back rank, while at the bottom the pieces stand almost shoulder to shoulder.

What makes the Alban knight different?

The mane. The horse is carved with hair that gives it a profile belonging to this pattern alone, and nothing else in the army is allowed that much character.

How heavy is the set?

Each option carries its own grade and its own figure, and both are set out in the specifications below.

Do the pieces stay upright?

Yes. The bases are broad for the height each piece carries and the weight sits low in them, so somebody catching the edge of the table does not scatter a position.

How many pieces are supplied?

34 chess pieces, including a spare queen of each colour. What is in the box is listed in full below.

Is a board or a storage box included?

No, neither one is included. This listing is the chessmen on their own, so a board and a box are both separate purchases. Match whatever board you buy to the square window in the specifications below.
