Executive Staunton 108mm Chess Pieces

The Executive Staunton is a plain, well made playing set. The shapes are classic Staunton proportions, each piece handcrafted in timber and polished by hand, and there is nothing on the board that needs explaining to anyone who has played before.

The king stands 108mm. It is a size that suits a full sized board and an ordinary table, and a position stays legible from a normal seated distance, with no need to stand over it.

The pieces are weighted for balance, which is the difference between a piece that stays where you leave it and one that slides when a sleeve brushes past. It also makes the set calmer to play with.

There are two pairings on offer. The light army is natural boxwood in both, and the dark army is either ebonised boxwood or golden rosewood, so the choice is only ever about the dark side.

Thirty four pieces are supplied in the timber option you choose. It is stocked with our staunton chess pieces.

The proportions are the classic Staunton ones, and the set holds to them closely. In practice that means a full sized army, so this is a set for a proper board and a table with room to spare.

The finish is the other half of it. Each piece is shaped and then polished, and the difference shows over a long game: the set is as good to handle as it is to look at.

The weighting is the part you notice in play. A piece set down stays set down, the back rank does not shuffle when the table gets knocked, and a move lands with a bit of weight behind it rather than a click.

It is built for both halves of the hobby: the games you sit down and play, and the weeks in between when the set is simply part of the room. Neither use feels like a compromise.

These pieces suit boards with squares of 60mm to 65mm, and both ends of that window are comfortable. There is bare square showing around the king even at the narrow end, so you can choose on looks.

Choosing between the two timbers

The ebonised option is boxwood brought to a near black. It separates the two armies sharply, which helps in a dim room and at the end of a long evening when your eyes are tired.

The golden rosewood option keeps a timber colour on the dark side as well as the light, so the two sides sit closer together and the board is the quieter of the two to look at.

One thing does change beyond the colour. The golden rosewood army is the heavier of the two, though the gap is small enough that you would not pick it blind, and the heights and bases are identical either way.

So the decision is about the look of the board and very little else. Take the ebonised when the two sides need to separate cleanly, and the golden rosewood if you would sooner have timber facing timber.

Keep the set out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, which is what makes hardwood check. Dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, polish and solvents alone.

I rate this one for being ordinary in the right way. It does the job it was made for, and after a game or two you stop looking at the pieces and start reading the position.

The weighting is what I would notice first in play. There is enough presence for the pieces to sit still on the board, and they stay light enough in the hand that a three hour game never turns into work.

My reservation is the board. This set is cut for large squares, and even the smallest board it suits is a bigger piece of furniture than it sounds. Measure what you already own before you order.
