Description

Ferocious Elite Series 113mm Chess Pieces

The bishop is the piece that marks this set out. At 91mm it stands seven millimetres above the 84mm knight and only seven below the 98mm queen, which makes it far more prominent than a bishop usually is.

The rook does the opposite. At 65mm it sits 26mm below the bishop, so the officer rank drops away sharply toward the corners rather than descending in even steps.

A 113mm king, triple weighted to 1,884g, in genuine ebony or bud rosewood. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.

Ferocious Elite Series chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood, 113mm king

Key features

  • 113mm (4.45 inch) king on a 48mm base, sized for 60mm squares
  • Bishop at 91mm, unusually tall and close to the 98mm queen
  • Rook at 65mm drops sharply away from the officer group
  • Available in genuine ebony or bud rosewood, both against boxwood
  • Triple weighted to 1,884g across the full set, around 55g a piece
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection
  • Identical dimensions and weight across both options

How the two timbers compare

Genuine ebony is near black with almost no visible figure, which suits a set whose interest is in its proportions rather than its surface. Bud rosewood is a figured burl with a reddish ground, where each piece carries its own swirling grain.

On this pattern the ebony has a slight edge for legibility. With the bishop crowding the queen in height, a flat dark side keeps the silhouettes clean, where figure adds noise to a rank that is already unusual.

Dimensions, the 1,884g weight and the price are identical, so it is a decision about appearance. Both sit in our wood chess pieces range.

A tall bishop and a low rook

The conventional officer ladder runs bishop, knight, rook in fairly even steps. This one exaggerates both ends: the bishop climbs toward the queen and the rook falls away toward the pawns.

What that does to the board is push the visual weight inward. The bishops, standing beside the royals, form a tall central block, while the corners sit low. It is a more dramatic arrangement than an even ladder and it reads clearly from across a room. The practical gain is that a bishop is never mistaken for a knight at this height difference.

Triple weighting at 1,884g

Around 55g a piece on a 113mm king is well judged rather than extreme. The heaviest sets in our range reach 2,300g and become tiring to move repeatedly; the lightest at this height feel insubstantial.

At 1,884g on a 48mm base these are firmly planted, land with a solid note, and remain comfortable through a long game. If you have handled a 2,300g set and found it more than you wanted, this is the same presence at a more usable weight.

Sizing a board and storing the set

Squares of 60mm. The 48mm base drives that rather than the height, and on 55mm the back rank fills almost completely.

The supplier notes that a coffer style storage box suits a set of this size, sold separately. No board or box is included here. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size, and a plain board suits the bud rosewood option better than a figured one.

Our expert take

The proportions are what you are buying. Pushing the bishop up to 91mm and dropping the rook to 65mm gives a back rank with a tall centre and low corners, which is more dramatic than the usual even ladder and genuinely easier to read at distance. The weighting is the other thing done well: 1,884g is enough presence at 113mm without crossing into the territory where moving pieces becomes a chore. Two notes. It needs 60mm squares. And no storage is included despite a set this size wanting some, so budget for a box if you plan to pack it away.

Squares of 60mm. The 48mm king base drives that rather than the 113mm height.

The pattern pushes the bishop to 91mm, only seven below the queen, and drops the rook to 65mm. It gives the back rank a tall centre and low corners rather than an even ladder, and a bishop is never mistaken for a knight.

What is the difference between the two timbers?

Genuine ebony is near black with almost no figure. Bud rosewood is a figured burl where each piece differs. Dimensions, the 1,884g weight and the price are identical.
