This is a heavy set built on broad feet. A 111mm king on a 49mm base, officers on 43mm, triple weighted to 2,250g across the 34 pieces. Nothing here is slim, and the pawns are the giveaway: at 65mm they are taller than the rooks on many patterns, so the front rank has real presence rather than reading as a row of studs.
The dark side is bud rosewood, a warm reddish brown that deepens with age, against natural boxwood on the light.
Supplied with a 58cm bud rosewood and maple board, 22mm thick and 5,500g. It sits in our luxury chess pieces collection.
Read this part before ordering. Two Ferocious Elite products sit on this store and they are not the same pieces.
The pieces-only listing is the 113mm version, offered in bud rosewood or genuine ebony. This set is the 111mm version, and every dimension differs: the king base is 49mm against 48mm, the queen is 97mm against 98mm, the knight is 80mm against 84mm, and the pieces weigh 2,250g against 1,884g. Two millimetres at the king, but a visibly heavier set overall.
If you want the pieces on their own, that is the 113mm listing within our luxury chess pieces collection. If you want a matched set with a solid board, this is it. Boards for either sit across our chess boards collection.
Triple weighting means iron is set into the base of each piece before the felt goes on, and 2,250g across 34 pieces puts this near the top of what a wooden set of this height carries. The point is not heft for its own sake. A 111mm piece is tall enough to topple if the mass sits high, so the counterweight in the foot is what holds it upright when a sleeve catches the board.
The board does its own share. Five and a half kilograms at 22mm thick does not slide when a piece is placed firmly, which is the other half of why a heavy set feels settled rather than merely heavy. Together the set runs close to 7,750g.
Most patterns cut the pawn short so the officers stand clear of it. Here the pawn reaches 65mm against a 67mm rook, which means the two ranks sit almost level and the pawn structure reads as a wall rather than a scattering.
The officers are broad to match, all three on 43mm bases with the bishop at 90mm. That combination fills a 60mm square properly. It also means the set needs those 60mm squares: on 55mm the pawns alone would close the position visually before a single move was made.
Pieces and board are both bud rosewood against a light timber, which is less common than it sounds. Most sets at this level pair good pieces with whatever board fits the price, and the two do not quite belong together on the table.
The board is 58.4cm across with 60mm squares, 22mm thick at 5,500g, bud rosewood on the dark squares and maple on the light. Allow close to a metre of table so there is room for captured pieces beside it. Thirty four pieces including two spare queens. No storage box. The pattern is also listed among our Staunton chess pieces.
The matched timber is what lifts this above an assembly of parts. Bud rosewood pieces on a bud rosewood board, both against maple and boxwood, means the set reads as one object rather than as good pieces sitting on whatever board came to hand, and 22mm underneath is furniture rather than a playing surface. The proportions are deliberate too: broad bases, tall pawns and 2,250g of triple weighting give a board that feels full rather than sparse. Two things to be straight about. This is the 111mm version and it is not the same as the 113mm Ferocious Elite pieces sold separately, so do not buy this expecting those. And 58.4cm plus 111mm pieces is a lot of table, so measure first. If the space is there, it is a set to keep.

58.4cm x 58.4cm with 60mm squares, 22mm thick and around 5,500g, in bud rosewood and maple.
No. This is the 111mm version and every dimension differs, including a heavier 2,250g of pieces against 1,884g. They are separate products.
Iron is set into the base of each piece before the felt is applied, at the heaviest of the three standard weighting grades. Here that comes to around 2,250g across the 34 pieces.
Not well. A 49mm king base and 43mm officer bases are documented against 60mm squares, and that is what is supplied.
No. This listing is the 34 pieces and the board only.
