Description

Fierce Knight Staunton 88mm Chess Pieces

A compact Staunton at 88mm to the top of the king, weighted, and cut for boards with squares between 45mm and 55mm. This is the set for a smaller table.

It is meant to be played with. The set suits a smaller board, or a room where a full sized army would take over the surface it stands on.

There are two dark timbers to choose from, golden rosewood or ebonised boxwood, and the light army is plain boxwood either way.

At 700 grams for the complete set it is light in the hand, and the weighting keeps that lightness from becoming a problem in play.

It sits with our Staunton chess pieces, in golden rosewood or ebonised boxwood.

Golden rosewood and boxwood Fierce Knight Staunton chessmen

Key features

  • A weighted king sized for a smaller board, not a full tournament army
  • King and queen share the widest foot in the set, so the royal pair reads as a pair
  • Bishop, knight and rook stand on one shared base width, giving the rank an even line
  • Cut for smaller boards, so it is worth measuring the squares before ordering
  • 700 grams across all 34 pieces, light enough to move quickly through a fast game
  • Golden rosewood or ebonised boxwood on the dark side, plain boxwood on the light
  • 34 pieces, which is a spare queen of each colour on top of the standard game array
  • Weighted bases, so a piece sits down when it is placed and stays where you left it

About the pieces

The Fierce Knight is a working Staunton rather than a display set. Every shape on the board is the familiar one, so there is nothing to learn before you start playing.

What gives it its look is the footprint. King and queen sit on the widest base in the set and match each other exactly, so the royals read as one unit at the centre of the rank.

Either side of them the bishop, knight and rook all share a single base width. Three piece types on one foot is what makes the outer rank look even rather than stepped.

The pawn is the only piece standing on anything narrower. That keeps the front rank visually quiet and leaves the back rank doing the work when you look down at the position. It is a small thing, but it is why the opening position reads clearly on a board this size.

These pieces suit smaller boards, with squares of 45mm to 55mm. The lower half of that window is the honest fit, because the king stands on a modest foot and a larger square leaves the position looking thin.

Ebonised boxwood and boxwood Fierce Knight Staunton chessmen

Choosing between the two timbers

Both options put the same plain boxwood army on the light side, so the choice in front of you is only about the dark half of the set.

Golden rosewood is the warmer of the two. It carries visible grain and reads brown rather than black, which suits a lighter board and a room with daylight in it.

Ebonised boxwood is the higher contrast option, brought to a near black. Against the boxwood light army the two sides separate cleanly, which helps under a lamp or in a photograph.

If you want the set to sit quietly in a traditional room, take the golden rosewood. If you want the pieces to read instantly from across a table, take the ebonised. Both play identically, so this is a decision about the room and not about the game.

Keep the set out of direct sun and away from a heater, dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, furniture polish and solvent based cleaners alone.

Our expert take

What you are getting is a full Staunton vocabulary on a small footprint. Nothing has been simplified to make the set smaller. It is the same shapes, drawn to a smaller scale.

The weighting earns its place at this scale. There is enough mass in each base that a piece settles when you put it down and does not travel when the table is knocked.

Buy it as a second set, or as a first proper one if your board is on the small side. If you want something heavier for a permanent table, look across our luxury chess pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What square size does this set need?

45mm to 55mm, and the lower half of that range is the better fit. Go wider and the pieces start to look stranded on their squares.

Are the pieces weighted?

Yes, the set is weighted. Each base carries enough mass for the piece to stay where you put it.

How many pieces are supplied?

34. That is the 32 a game uses, plus a spare queen of each colour so a promotion does not send you hunting for a captured piece.

What is the difference between the two timbers?

Only the dark army. Golden rosewood is warm and shows its grain; ebonised boxwood is brought to a near black for higher contrast. The light side is plain boxwood either way.

Is a board included?

No. This listing is the chessmen only, so the board is chosen separately to suit the square size.

Will it feel too small?

That depends on the board. On squares in the middle of its range the set fills the square properly. On anything cut for a full sized army it will look lost.
