Description

Geometric Minimalist Ebonised 88mm Chess Pieces

Every piece in this set stands on exactly the same 30mm base. King, queen, bishop, knight, rook and pawn, all identical underfoot, which is something no other set we carry does.

The effect on the board is unusual. Because nothing is wider than anything else, the back rank forms a perfectly even row of cylinders varying only in height, and the whole position reads as a bar chart rather than as a landscape.

Ebonised against natural boxwood, unweighted and unfelted, 580g. It sits among our minimalist chess pieces.

Geometric Minimalist chess pieces in ebonised and natural boxwood, 88mm king

Key features

  • 88mm (3.46 inch) king, with every piece on a matched 30mm base
  • Seamless turned profiles with no collar rings or stepped detail
  • Ebonised boxwood dark side with a natural boxwood light side
  • Unweighted and unfelted, in keeping with the minimalist design
  • 580g across the full set, around 17g a piece
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Sized for 45mm squares despite the 88mm king height
  • Hand turned in India

How this compares to other minimalist chess pieces

Most minimalist sets simplify the decoration but keep the proportions: the king still sits on a wider base than the pawn, because that is how you make a set stable and legible. This one abandons that too.

A uniform 30mm base means an 88mm king has the same footprint as a 43mm pawn. Visually it is striking and completely coherent. Structurally it means the king is the least stable piece on the board, which combined with no weighting is the honest trade you are making.

Against the Bauhaus set, which reduces pieces to geometric solids describing their moves, this one keeps recognisable Staunton silhouettes and simplifies only the turning. The wider range sits in our chess pieces collection.

Every Geometric Minimalist piece stands on a matched 30mm base

What a uniform base costs and buys

Base width does two jobs on a normal set: it stabilises tall pieces, and it signals rank at a glance. Making every base the same removes both.

What you buy is visual coherence. The back rank becomes an even row with no stepping at the foot, so the eye reads only the profile and the height, which is exactly what a minimalist design wants. What you pay is stability, particularly on the king, and a lost identification cue when the board is crowded and you are scanning quickly.

Why 45mm squares for an 88mm king

An 88mm king would normally want 55mm squares. This one asks for 45mm, and the 30mm base is why: square size is driven by the widest footprint, not by height.

The result is a set that stands unusually tall relative to its board. On 45mm squares the pieces are close together and distinctly vertical, which suits the design. Going up to 55mm makes the set look stranded, because slim uniform cylinders do not fill a large square the way a stepped Staunton foot does.

Seamless turned profiles on the Geometric Minimalist chess pieces

Unweighted, and what that means in play

There is no metal in the base and no felt underneath. At around 17g a piece these are among the lightest pieces we sell, and they slide across a board rather than settling onto it.

For slow play or for a set that mostly gets looked at, that is fine and it keeps the design honest. For blitz it is not: a light piece on a narrow base is the worst combination for a time scramble. Our tournament chess pieces range covers that need. No board is included with these pieces.

Our expert take

The uniform 30mm base is a real design idea carried through properly rather than half way, and on the board it produces something genuinely different: an even row of cylinders where only height separates the ranks. I like it a great deal as an object. Be clear about the trade though. No weighting, no felt, 17g a piece and the tallest piece on the narrowest footprint in the range means this is a set for slow games and for display, not for a club night. And it wants 45mm squares despite an 88mm king, which surprises people, so check your board.

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 45mm. Square size follows the widest base rather than the height, and every piece here sits on 30mm, so the set needs a smaller board than an 88mm king normally would.

Are the pieces weighted?

No. They are unweighted and unfelted, which is why the full 34 pieces come to only 580g. They are light and will slide rather than settle.

Why is every base the same size?

It is the central design decision. Removing the graded footprint makes the back rank an even row where only profile and height distinguish the pieces. It costs stability on the king and a rank cue when scanning quickly.

Is the dark side genuine ebony?

No. The dark pieces are ebonised boxwood taken to a deep even black. Genuine ebony sets sit across our wood chess pieces range.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards and storage are sold separately.
