Description

Grandmaster Staunton 95mm Chess Pieces

This set was drawn for blitz. The king and queen share a 41mm base, the three minor officers share a 32mm base, and there are only two base diameters in the entire back rank. Every piece your hand reaches for feels like the piece next to it.

That consistency is what makes a set fast. In a time scramble you are not adjusting your grip between a wide bishop and a narrow rook; you pick up, you place, you hit the clock. The 95mm king is tournament standard and the 1,100g total keeps it quick rather than ponderous.

Ebonised or sheesham on the dark side, natural boxwood on the light. It sits in the club end of our Staunton chess pieces.

Key features

  • 95mm (3.75 inch) king on a 41mm base, sized for 50mm to 55mm squares
  • Only two base diameters across the whole set: 41mm royals, 32mm officers
  • Choice of ebonised or sheesham, both paired with natural boxwood
  • 1,100g across the full set, around 32g a piece
  • Bishop and knight nearly level at 70mm and 69mm
  • 34 pieces including two spare queens for effortless pawn promotion
  • Designed for tournament and club play rather than display
  • Thick green felt on every base for smooth movement and board protection

How the Grandmaster Staunton compares to other Staunton chess pieces

Collector sets vary base diameter piece by piece, which looks considered and gives each rank its own character. It also means your hand meets something slightly different every time you move.

This design goes the other way and standardises. Two diameters, both comfortable, repeated across the set. It is the sort of decision that only shows up under time pressure, and it is why sets like this end up in club cupboards rather than display cabinets.

At 1,100g it is deliberately light for its height. If you want mass, the triple weighted options in the Staunton chess pieces will suit you better; if you play a lot of fast chess, this is the more useful set.

Designing for the clock

Most chess set design assumes an unhurried game. Under a time control everything changes: the pieces you touch most are pawns, the moves you make fastest are recaptures, and any friction between hand and piece costs you seconds you do not have.

Standardising the base diameters removes one source of that friction. The king and queen are 41mm, the bishop, knight and rook are all 32mm, and the pawn at 29mm is close enough to the officers that the transition is unnoticeable. Combined with a moderate 32g average weight, the set moves as fast as you can.

Matched royal bases and a level officer rank

The king at 95mm and the queen at 84mm sit on the same 41mm foot, which gives the centre of the back rank a paired, solid look rather than a stepped one. It also means the two pieces you least want to knock over are the two hardest to knock over.

Behind them the bishop at 70mm and the knight at 69mm are effectively level on matched 32mm bases, so the minor officers read as a group. Only the rook at 54mm breaks the pattern, dropping well below to keep the corners of the board open.

Choosing a board for a 41mm base

The 41mm king base gives a range of 50mm to 55mm squares. At 50mm the board is tight and busy, which suits fast play on a small table. At 55mm there is more space around each piece. Both are correct and the choice is about how you like to see the position.

No board is included with these pieces. Our chess boards collection is filtered by square size so you can pick either end of the range.

Our expert take

This is a club set that knows it is a club set. Standardising to two base diameters is a small, unglamorous decision that pays off every time you move under time pressure, and the matched 41mm royal bases keep the king and queen planted. At roughly 32g a piece it is light, which is the point rather than a shortcoming: this is built for speed, not for heft. If you want a set to look at, buy something else. If you want a set for a weekly rapid night, this is the obvious choice at the price.

Weighted Grandmaster Staunton chess pieces with a 41mm king base

Frequently asked questions

What size board do these need?

Squares of 50mm to 55mm, from the 41mm king base. 50mm gives a tight busy board suited to fast play, 55mm gives more space around each piece.

Which timber should I choose?

Dimensions, carving and weight are identical, so it is purely visual. Ebonised is near black with the highest contrast against the natural boxwood and reads fastest under club lighting. Sheesham is a warm mid brown with visible grain.

Why do the king and queen share a base diameter?

Both sit on 41mm. It gives the centre of the back rank a paired look and makes the two most important pieces the hardest to knock over. The minor officers all share a 32mm base for the same consistency.

How heavy is the set?

1,100g across 34 pieces, around 32g a piece. That is deliberately light for a 95mm king, so the set handles quickly. Heavier options are available across our chess pieces collection.

Is a chess board or storage box included?

No. This listing is for the 34 pieces only, including the two spare queens. Boards are sold separately and no storage box ships with the set.
