A tall army on a slim frame. The king stands 119mm, and the whole set is drawn from the lotus flower, so each shape opens outward the way petals do.
It is hand carved and hand turned by master artisans, and that shows most in the way a piece steps up out of its base into the flare above it.
The weight is the part that surprises people. The complete set is 500 grams, so the height arrives without the heft you might brace yourself for when you reach across the board.
Two dark timbers are offered, high grade ebony or bud rosewood, with a boxwood army standing opposite either of them.
It sits among our theme chess pieces, in ebony or bud rosewood.
The lotus is not a decoration bolted onto a conventional outline. It is the organising idea of the whole set, and every piece on the board is a version of the same opening flower drawn at a different height.
That is what produces the proportion. These are tall, narrow pieces, with the height carried up a slender stem and all of the character gathered into the head.
Underfoot the arrangement is simple. King and queen share the broadest foot, bishop and rook share the next one down, the knight comes in below them and the pawn is narrowest of all.
The lightness follows from that same shape. There is not much timber in a narrow piece, so a set this tall still comes in at a weight you can carry across a room in one hand.
These pieces suit boards with 45mm squares. That is the size to match, and it is worth measuring one on the board you own first. The feet are narrow enough to sit comfortably at that size despite the height above them.
The light army is boxwood in both options, so the only question in front of you is which of the two dark timbers you want standing across the board from it.
Ebony is naturally dark, close to black, with a tight and quiet surface. On a design this sculptural it lets the shape do all the talking and keeps the eye on the outline.
Bud rosewood is warmer and far busier. The figure swirls through each piece, which suits the petal forms well, because the grain moves in roughly the same direction the shape does.
Take ebony if you want the lotus read as a silhouette. Take bud rosewood if you want the timber itself to be part of the ornament. The shapes are identical either way.
Keep the set out of direct sun and away from a heater, dust with a dry soft cloth, and leave oil, furniture polish and solvent based cleaners alone.
Buy this one with your eyes open about what it is. The lotus idea is carried right through the army, and the appeal is the shape of the thing long before it is the game.
Height and weight pull in opposite directions here, and that is the honest observation to make about the set. It looks large from across a table and it does not feel large once it is in your hand.
It suits a display board, a shelf in a study, or a slow game at home. If a design with a documented history behind it appeals more, look across our reproduction chess pieces.

45mm. Measure a square on the board you already own before you order, because an army this tall wants exactly that size underneath it.
32, which is the standard game array. There are no spare queens in this one, so a promotion means reusing a captured piece.
Yes. Each base carries enough load for a piece to sit down where you place it, which matters on an army this tall.
No, and that is worth saying plainly. It is tall and light at the same time, because the pieces are narrow and hold very little timber. Pick one up before you judge the set by its height.
The dark side only. Ebony reads almost black with a quiet surface, while bud rosewood is warmer and full of movement. Both face the same boxwood army.
No. This listing covers the chessmen, so a board is picked separately to suit the square size.
